Consider
Some high schools pay for three refs, most don't. I can't see how a reasonable job can be done by just 2 refs. The cost of a third ref is very little as compared to all the expense of putting the game on.

High School Refs
Don't most schools charge kids a 'sports' fee now? Say $225 to play a 'fall' sport and $225 to play a 'winter' sport--etc?
Let's say a good sized 6A school (any of the Beaverton high schools) have a Varsity team and carry 20-22 girls. If you take 22 times $225---you get $4500.
If they also carry a JV team, with the same number--you get $4500.
If they carry a JV2 team---same--you get $4500.
Finally, some of the PDX metro area high schools even carry down to a pure/true freshman team=---same math, you get $4500.
That's just in fees collected, to play that sport, for the fall. So, $4500 times say at least 3 teams: $13,500
I get the fact that you have to use some of these fees to pay for fields, to pay for extra/over time for school staff/janitorial staff, other misc fees. You have to pay for insurance/liability costs, etc.
Even if a high school is playing say 14-16 soccer games, in the fall, times 3 refs, at $60/game---times three teams---you are only talking about $2500-$3000 for the refs (to have at least 3 refs per game). If you cannot afford 3 refs, at least for the varsity games, then charge the kids $250 for each season.....you could then afford to have that extra ref.
I have been to a couple of games this fall, with top teams playing, and have only seen 2 refs on the field. It's not fair to the girls. The schools and or the parents should be able to afford to have at least 3 refs for ALL varsity matches.

I just wish they knew the rules
In five games this season I have see Center Refs not know the rules twice which affected the out come both times.
DC how much they get paid but knowing the rules should be a prerequisite for a 6A varsity match!

I have seen refs that can hardly run
I agree---the quality of the officiating of 6A soccer in Oregon leaves a LOT to be desired. I have attended 5 matches in the last 2 weeks. 4 out of the 5 had refs that SHOULD NOT be reffing high school soccer, at least at the 6A level. Two of them were so out of shape/heavy that they basically patrolled the mid field. One made a call where he was at least 45-50 yards away. No way he could actually see what was going on.
It's sad that girls, playing at the highest level, have to be subjected to refs that probably should be reffing U-11 rec soccer. One guy I saw at a match on Monday was just so out of place most of the time that he missed 3-4 BLATANT fouls that could have been called 'yellow cards' in most other games but he just was not in position to see the play.
I guess it's the case of 'you get what you pay for' or 'lowest common denominator' soccer reffing.

Tigard loses 5-0. Tigard has injuries I get it But the keeper just a few years back gave up 48 goals in premier league 12 game schedule. That gives me a clue that Tigard is done for the next 3 years. Glad my kid goes to another school !!!!

Uh yeah---paid very close attention

I am sure a couple 5A teams could compete but there is a reason that the schools are divided into different sizes and classifications---it's called student body population size.
Yes--maybe a few teams can or could compete but most would NOT. So yes---to answer your question, I am thinking 6A soccer is the top, both metaphorically and in reality.
Sure, there are some lousy 6A just as there are some lousy 5A teams too....and conversely---some good 6A teams and some good 5A teams. I would say that 60-70% of the time, the 6A teams will be able to beat or at least tie the better 5A teams but we only get to see a little bit of that action in the early pre-season, huh??
