Clash at the Border Reviews.Your input here-->

I am curious about what non-tournament (those not involved with or employed by the Clash at the border tournament or the Washinton Timbers) folks think of the Clash of the Border event as it unfolds this weekend? Pre-tournament experience, parking, field conditions, vending, concessions, traffic, refs, team competition, whatever. No names please and lets keep it professional. How was the tournament? Good and bad.

Very nice setup for the trolls to start their attack. I particularly love how you were able to disguise your intentions with the 'good and the bad'. Crafty fellow you are.

No trolling needed. The truth is bad enough.

I have done this tournament a few times, the tournament itself has been fine. From what I have seen the fields were in decent shape, but my biggest worry is because of all this rain the last few days how its going to hold up. If it was a dry weekend I think the fields would hold up just fine and there would be no issues, but you can't really plan for this weather in june.

And yet it kicks the buttocks of THUSC tourney, same area, same weekend. What does that make THUSC?

In what way is it better? It has more teams. But does that make it better? Given that the right level of competition is available for a particular team, what makes one better than the other?

My DD isn't playing in either tourney but in her age group THUSC will have better like-vs-like competition than Clash, even though the top 1 to 2 teams at Clash are clearly better than the top teams at THUSC.

It's better because top to bottom it has more teams and more quality teams. If you compare age group by age group, every boys age is better, and most are better on the girls side. In fact, only U11 seems to be in question for me, but maybe that is because U11 is NWCL qualifier at THUSC. But even U11 is surprisingly weak given the circumstances of NWCL qualifier.

What age group is your DD?

I would have to disagree, last year in the gold division our A team had to play Thusc A, B, and C team. There was 1 good game and 2 completely blow outs.

Unfortunately number of teams often means closer level of competition between teams in most cases.

                  Hockinson meadows Update 7pm 6-27

Field are playing well, little to no mud. Looks like they shed that water off well, which surprised me.

I've found in dry years the ground is bone dry and plays hard. If the weather holds the grass and ground will be perfect for the kids.

I've had teams in the Clash for the last 5 year, and chose it as a local tournament because it has always attracted better teams than most other tourneys.

                        1. PARKING Is muddy and frankly, awful. Potholes, especially right at the entrance of tourni is a bad first impression. Maybe you could put gravel down before such a major event? Im sure thats a cost issue but muddy wet feet in our cars is gross. Period. No nice way to say it.

                        2. Concessions were very good and well planned and reasonably priced. Thanks.

                        3. Strategic tents set up for rain, very nice. Helpful in the rain and wind. Thank you.

                        4. Fields are small, draining ok, but on some poorly sloped fields the touch line dips dramatically and affects play. That said, Fields were groomed reasonably well and lined to spec.

                        5. Saw a lot of young refs. For a major tourni, maybe not the best in personnel choice but that is just my opinion and I dont know if my small sample was what everyone else encountered. Inexperience is not wise in competitive situations.

                        6. Personnel, that I encountered, were REALLY nice and helpful and courteous. Kudos for that.

                        7. Saw lots of confused people not knowing where their fields were. Advice: Put up more signs with LARGE COLORFUL field maps, all over. Lots more. It will be more efficient in the long run. Also, add a PDF link of that same field map in an EASY TO FIND location in the tourni website for mobile phone users to download as a reference. NO COST FOR A PDF LINK.

                        8. Bathrooms were plentiful and clean. Thank you.

                        9. Please label better some of your nets with field location numbers. Some were hard to read or unreadable altogether. Finding ones field should be easy.

                        10. Competition thus far has been very good. Thank you.

                            What the heck?

                            An honest, reasonable review?

What site am I on? Hotels.com? Surely not talking soccer.

I'm only kidding. I am sure the organizers will appreciate the feedback.

My daughter played in the Capital Cup up in Salem today and other than it taking 20 mins to get out of the parking lot after the game, it was a well run, fun operation.
