All this talk about "You're gonna lose..." reminds me of that fat kid in " A league of their Own".
You don't want your DD playing ECNL? Fine. But as of right now it's the easiest why to get to play better competition. Will they lose? Maybe. But at least they are stepping up to the plate and taking a swing. Not bitching about it on a soccer blog.

Here is an idea. Why all this talk about the BEST competition? Better competition?
If a team cannot easily be top team in their state why in the world are you even talking about playing teams from California as if an OYSA team can't go play in a tournament to play a cali team. Its not like any teams were doing well outside of Oregon to begin with.
You would go to one tournament in Seattle and get beat but evidently you seem to think playing ECNL costs make it more worth it than the team that went to a tournament outside of their league?
You are on a team that wouldn't make it first out of league in OPL or OYSA age UP but yet you want to PAY to go play a team that wouldn't either (Idaho or some other garbage ECNL teams)
What is hilarious is that you people think that putting your kid in ECNL is going to make them better when all you need to do is have them play against kids who will challenge them enough to work on the content that is being taught while trying to make sure they don't get burned out.
With your logic, why don't you have your 8 year old playing against 15 year olds. The better the competition the BEST development right?????????????????????
Sure they will learn to rid themselves of the ball real quick.
You say exposure then? Thats even more of a joke. Firstly, ECNL teams are not all good and its very easy to go to Socal Blues game instead of FC Portland ECNL who didn't score more than 10 goals all year.... This is overlooking the fact you are paying college tuition for your kid to hopefully be seen to get enough college tuition to justify which is laughable.
Meanwhile just ask the players who've been recruited to schools outside of this state and they will tell you, going to 5 showcases vs 3 will not help your chances but getting better will help you. If you are worried your kid isn't going to get enough looks, you are misplacing your hope.
Sure step up to the plate and take a swing ignorant ECNL dad but evidently brains do not come with the 10k you think will help your kid use her left foot now.
I could go all day but I'm sure some moron will dismiss it as OYSA/OPL league talk thinking that actually means something but if OYSA had ECNL i'd say the same thing.
FYI I played professionally and coached college. Believe me if you want but you will come to find either now or in a few years I was right.
Roll the dice if you want but 36k to play a sport that is played in the streets all on the idea you will get an average of a 5k scholarship to play at a D2 school or below along with the development practices of ECNL is a joke to begin with sounds like a hell of a gamble to me.

Living in the past

Who wanted to play it safe? The ECNL teams that's who. These teams thought that playing In NWCL was stepping up. Funny but the best Seattle teams weren't playing in this league and regardless the pdx teams got pounded in this league. But yet everyone should step up for big dollars now that we have ECNL even though every indication is that these teams won't be successful. But those who don't buy into ECNL here in Portland are the ones to be berated for not wanting to step up. Oh the hypocrisy.
The only persons who feel berated are the ones pretending that the Academy is going to be providing serious competition.

So what is the answer Copa Girls
I still haven't heard a response form the Copa parents if they have been given an promise from the Timbers to have the whole team taken. I have seen a post saying they are not going to do the Academy and others from persons saying they are going to tryout.
If they tryout how can they keep the team together? Even if the Timbers take the whole team how are they going to get playing time on a 24 person roster with a handful of games?
Personally I do not see a reason for the WST Copa's to tryout.

Take the entire copa team and add on your four good players and call it the ECNL team and now your talking.
It does not matter what team any DD played on or what their success was pre or post split. The point is that ECNL is a different opportunity going forward. Harping on the HISTORY of ONE team is ignoring the FUTURE for all successive teams. The WST copa 16 team is the only girls team in WST history to have meaningful success and there are no others in any of the TA clubs poised to pick up their mantel.
I agree that the core of the Copa team should be taking on the challenge of the ECNL but totally understand the money issue.

regardless if you can name one other WS girls team with out of sate success the point remains. One team every 5 years is not "a girls program"!

Galaxy, their individual collegiate achievements are enough. Their tournaments during HS years are just a little significance.
These are just a couple of the gils teams that achieved success on the national standard. Not just in the NW.
As I'm writing, I'm realizing how dumb I am to even respond. I'll leave my response at this.
Eventually you'll realize that soccer in Oregon is not consistent, at any club. Find a coach, find a team, determine how long that coach will stay with that group if the club doesn't have depth and enjoy the ride. The club can influence the experience, but it comes down to the coach and the players on the team.

Yes Fury did a good job of placing girls into college but the point remains WS is not a girls club with a HISTORY of either team or player success.
I agree that all clubs 'success' is cyclical but to claim that WS is in any way a destination for top girl players is not credible.
The point is who was the coach and are they still WST coaches?
