The purpose is for higher competition, whether that be a, b, or c, team. Playing up against girls that are a year older generally will make you work harder because of size and in most cases there is a size difference.

Playing up on a "B" or "C" team is ridiculous. This would not be a recommended strategy by almost any DOC or head coach that I know of. Size does not equate to good soccer. In many cases, the kind of soccer you will find here is slower, less skillful and a much more physical brand of soccer that potentially puts your child at risk of injury.

Possibly one of the dumbest things I have read in a sea of dumb things in here in some time.

Really, I'd hate for you to be my coach or DOC running around on this blog. Wasting your time here, nothing to help you out when it comes to coaching or running a club here.

Unless your child is good enough to play on the 1st team - they shouldn't be "playing up". This is a commonly known and accepted position. In fact, some clubs are now making that a rule.

Completely agree. The only play ups that should even be considered - especially on the girls side - is if the player is good enough to start on the first team.

I 100% agree with the previous poster.

The purpose of playing up is to match an exceptional player with a greater skill level and speed of thought, with players that can challenge those areas better and hopefully help them grow.

All that would be accomplished by having someone play up on a B and C team is exposing them to injury and more brutal style of play and increasing the ATHLETIC degree of difficulty, not the mental and skill level, what would be the point in that?

I will go one further and say that PLAYING up, particularly before U14, is generally a bad idea, but many more exceptional players should be TRAINING up, (with A teams).

Kids should be playing on age while training up, there is nothing wrong with dominating games and being better than everyone, if you want to succeed at the higher levels and out of state at the end game with teams, then you need to let the individuals who can dominate with skill do so at the earlier ages, not keep upping the athletic degree of difficulty and trying to make them average players on an older squad.

They should play up if they can start on the older team - if they want. Some enjoy being a king superstar on the younger team! Exceptions should be made either direction if the older team is much more competitive in their age group or if the younger team is much more competitive, maybe they can get enough of a challenge on age. Every case is different.
