    ECNL and the truth

I commend Crossfire United for landing an ECNL team (s). It will cost a bunch, yes. More than the usual club fee that everyone are accustomed paying. But better opportunities equates more dollars. No brainier. I do hope that there is a way for a deserving player, who cannot afford it, to be offered a means to pay. I'm certain something will be setup to address that.
Will the u16 team, for example, have all the best players from Oregon? Maybe. I hope so because I want them to show well.
Do all players need to be on an ECNL team to get exposed? No of course not. Especially since on any U18 team, year in and year out, less than 6 to 7 players are true D1 capable. So if you are looking to play at a small school, get a good education, etc.. a player can play in the usual showcases and tournaments. If you are a good player, you don't need ECNL(although an ECNL team will probably recruit you heavily) as you will be seen.
The other thing ( and maybe the biggest ) that parents really need to throw in the equation is that does a 14 or 15 year old really have to spend that much money to play in those top ECNL showcases when colleges don't really pay attention to players at that age group? I could be wrong? Don't know, I'm not a college coach. Maybe they do. Might be better for a family to wait until u16 or u17 year to play ECNL.
Again these are serious questions for families to digest. Serious families need to ignore hateful threads on this forum and get some fresh air. Hopefully this thread helps. Best of luck!

I love how socialism has to be a part of every discussion. ECNL is expensive. Period. Soccer is expensive. Period. If someone doesn't pay full ride then they are being subsidized by someone else. Sorry, kids are expensive. You should know that going in. I'm tired of this crap of one family should play for free while everyone else pays extra to support them.

Sorry your kid has you and your minimum wage job as support. You should have studied more in school rather than running off to smoke pot. We aren't here to support you now. You have to put your big boy pants on.

Even those of us that have the means to do whatever we want don't want to pay $10k+ to support huge profits for the clubs and ECNL. ECNL is making massive piles of cash per their financials.

Great. That's fine. I'm not pushing ECNL on anyone. And I'm not justifying the cost. I'm just arguing against the request that the cost be subsidized for those who can't afford it. I wasn't given everything in life, I worked long and hard to achieve where I am. I'm not the offspring of a millionaire. My kids are. I didn't work hard so that I can support the slackers.

I think its funny how big of a deal everyone has made this one both sides. Congrats to Crossfire and FC portland. Overall though how many players in the area is this going to really affect? If your a top player and have the financial means to play for an ENCL team then you will go to one of these two clubs to play ENCL. I know on our team in our top 6 players only 1-2 might be able to afford to play ENCL. I would guess that is the case on many of the better teams. One thing we aren't looking at though does portland really have enough "elite" players who can afford to do this to support 2 separate teams?

I have read a lot of different theories of what may happen because of this. So lets ask a few of those questions:

~how many player per team will a club really lose due to the travel/expenses involved.
~if your a middle/bottom end A team player at FC/Thusc/Crossfire and you don't make the ENCL team do you stick around to play on a B team or do you now leave to another club and take the spot of one of the players who left?
~How will this affect the OPL? I would guess it will have no effect on the lower level teams who are playing OPL to limit travel, but I wonder about the teams who are in the top division who now will lose 2 strong teams. With how the leagues are divided each league needs as many strong teams as possible. Do those teams stick around and play FC/Thusc/Crossfires "B" teams now that the "A" teams are ENCL? Or does this leave to the better teams who don't fall within those 3 going to OYSA?
~Does anything besides the league change with getting an ENCL team? What I mean is do they get special training?

It will be interesting in the next couple of weeks to see how the younger age girls teams shift as tryouts start. I'm not sure the parents of U12 and U13 are as informed about ECNL so I am curious to see if there is major shift before the Fall when U14 on up start tryouts.

Kids will migrate over regardless if they are on an ECNL team or not. Having ECNL will improve the coaching and training from top to bottom. EVEN IF your not on the ECNL squad. They will have plenty of kids to fill those gaps of the ones that go to ECNL. When it comes to girls soccer OPL is now the place to be. OYSA on the girls side is going to fade away.

Why don't you offer to be the fundraising chair?

I don't see it going that way at all. I would expect to see more OPL girls heading to OYSA clubs that don't want to spend exorbitant amounts of money on ECNL. The OYSA teams will be stronger than the remnants of the non-ECNL OPL teams.

How does the coaching improve top to bottom as you say. It's the same coaches. You people are so delusional.

And I would think any boys team at one of these ECNL clubs would be getting out as fast as possible.

Inevitably the clubs top level admins will all be focused on ECNL. More likely than not the boys teams will just be kept around to fund the girls program.

There are plenty of families that do not make minimum wage and are not slackers that will now be able to afford this.
