These are the thoughts that hold us back as a soccer nation.
The problem is that these DOCs DO allow their teams to play however they want in order to win. A good DOC would have a defined development philosophy and would recruit coaches that were bought in to that system and could facilitate it.
Name a club that has one way of doing things and actually holds their teams accountable for it. That would actually be refreshing to hear.

You soccer people are so funny. Isn't soccer a game in which you try to win? The long ball is no different than a basketball player who makes a full court pass to a teammate breaking away down court who then slams it home, or a football quarterback who makes a long pass to a receiver who just blew by the defensive backs. In soccer, you look for opportunities to score, and if at times it means sending a ball down field then so be it. Clearly I am not promoting that a player just "boots" the ball everytime they touch it.
We have played good california teams that you all praise on here and they use the long ball as much as any team we have played in oregon. We also play the top WA teams and they use the long ball as well. Yes, they have really good possession/passing skills as well, but almost everytime one of the WA or CA teams scored on us, it has been from a long ball.
It is not poor coaching when combined with all other skills. OF course, just like with basketball or football, you have to coach the skills of the game, but when available you take advantage of that long pass/kick.

I honestly am not sure why this is so hard for so many to understand. If your team doesn't intentionally pass the ball around the field with the majority being less than 15 yards, they are a boot ball team. The big difference is that a boot ball team can't play possession but a possession team can achieve results by playing some longer balls when appropriate.
Those California teams that you speak of don't play boot ball, sorry. I haven't seen one top Seattle team consistently play boot ball. This topic is so depressing as it speaks to the intelligence of Oregon soccer.

Only ONE vote of confidence
Very interesting that only the EMFC's DOC is well regarded and their parents think things might get worse. What does that say about the QUALITY of the clubs in the metro area?
Just another sign that the sheep are happy being fleeced and that Oregon is truly the State where mediocrity is revered!

Originally posted by Unregistered View PostWell said. When reading this guys response to my post I found it yet another discouraging example of an unsophisticated thought process. To use this guys analogy with the other sports he mentions it would be like watching a youth football team through a Hale Mary pass every play or a basketball team shoot from half court every time they get the ball and and then listening to someone proclaim that these teams are playing "long ball" football or "long ball" basketball, when in fact it's just terrible coaching. Unfortunately, this guys thought process is representative of many, including many coaches, and is what we're up against when it comes to the sport of soccer in the U.S.

My point was that just because someone uses a long ball to score does not make them a "boot ball" team.

Secondly, I never said it was a style nor was I attacking what was posted. I was simply saying that an intentionaly placed ball to the forward from a long distance is part of the game. And in no way was I comparing a long pass in soccer to a hail mary in football but rather a long pass to a receiver who out runs the defense. And again....I said it happens on occasion and also said it shouldn't be the focus...
Man, you are so smug you argue with anything, even if its in agreement with what you are saying.
