    Would your club:

    A. Get better
    B. Get Worse
    C Stay the Same.

Now include the name of your club and put some logic behind your conclusions.

Sort of impossible to say unless I know who the replacement is.

Good point. Describe the "better" replacement.

          What club and why?

What qualities would you be looking for in the replacement

            Good communicator.

            Leadership.

            Accessible.

            Fair.

Professional comportment (do we really need to cuss at the kids?)

One who actually goes out to practices/games to observe & evaluate...not for punitive purposes, but to make coaches better.

One who chooses a style-of-play for all teams and recruits coaches who support the philosophy (possession-oriented, long-ball, etc). This should be a "goal" as all teams are built different and you must sometimes play in ways you may not like.

One who sees club members as partners & advocates, not pariahs.

I would look for someone who does their homework and fights for his club teams. Someone who understands each team in the club and what the team wants and then makes sure the teams needs are addressed, as best as possible. The DOC should go to as many games early in the season as possible and take notes. Then should go to games later in the season and take notes and compare. Is the team progressing? Is it making the same mistakes? I don't want a DOC who waits for complaints from parents, instead I want an active one who forms their own opinions based upon first hand assessment. The DOC should be an advocate for his coaches too, in the case of unfair feedback from parents.

I also want one who is active in tournament evaluation and in working with the coaches in selecting the right tournaments for the team based on the team needs. For highly competitive ones with potential college players, which are the best tournaments to go to for exposure (and not just default to the one's that everyone seems to know about, but look beyond that). For less competitive teams, know all of the Seattle, not just Portland, tournaments and help select good one's.

Bottom line, one that selects the right coaches for teams, that monitors the teams progress and that works with the coaches to help select the right leagues and tournaments for that team. There are probably other things, but those are the things that are important to me.

When I said above to go to as many games as possible, what I mean is go to one game of each team within his club, not multiple games for one team. If a club is large, going to all of the teams may be difficult, but he should see an early season game or two for each team and a late season game or two for each team, if possible.

Sounds like there is a lot of room for improvement. Which club are you with?

I think it's safe to say there's ample room for improvement for ALL pdx area DOCs (& coaches). I've played and coached for a long time and I continually look for ways to improve. I listen & observe and try to put what I learn into practice. No one should be above this philosophy. If you stop learning, you should think about moving on.

You want people to name clubs, and they aren't going to. At least I'm not. I'm staying with the club and I don't need to be making negative comments out there, I have aired my issues to board members and they can take the information and deal with it as they see fit.

You asked a question about how it would improve and I politely explained. I think a generic answer about what people want out of a DOC is good information for you and should be what you are after, unless you are asking people to publicly bash their DOCs.

This sounds like our club's DOC (EMFC) except maybe the last line. Parents and players are treated with respect but we are members who either join to learn the game (players) or join to support our kids as they learn the game (parents). Not really partners/advocates and definitely not pariahs (not sure what that means!).

These are the thoughts that hold us back as a soccer nation.

The problem is that these DOCs DO allow their teams to play however they want in order to win. A good DOC would have a defined development philosophy and would recruit coaches that were bought in to that system and could facilitate it.

Name a club that has one way of doing things and actually holds their teams accountable for it. That would actually be refreshing to hear.
