    Meet the New Boss....

Excerpt from OYSA July 2013 minutes. Take away, dont cross the Timbers. Second point seems to suggest they think that competition is bad!

    New Club Proposal
o Cascade Rush applied to be a new member club. The club is located in Bend where we have an existing Club (Deschutes AFC dba Bend FC Timbers). Cascade Rush’s goal is to outreach to the Hispanic community and will not compete with the Bend FC Timbers. Yet it is staff’s understanding that a number of their existing players are former Bend FC Timber members. Not all technical requirements have been met to become a member, including board member conflicts of interest and bylaw issues. The Board is uncertain how an additional club in Bend will benefit soccer and how the new club will serve “new” OYSA players.

o A motion was made to table the topic. An amendment to the motion was made to table the topic & request an explanation of how Cascade Rush will get new members without competing with Bend FCTimbers and confirm this with Bend FC Timbers, resolve board members conflicts of interest and bylaw concerns. The amended motion was seconded and passed.

Yep. All competition to the Timbers will be squelched. I hope our club stays as far away from this OYSA Timbers League as possible...

I read that too and was disgusted. Timbers should have no say in whether or not they become a club. Timbers are not going about any of this the right way. Some people can't afford the Bend Timbers fees and shouldn't just be left out.

I am a Timbers Alliance member who believes in the Amateur Act and youth membership right to choose where they want to compete. If there are people in Bend that are seeking sanctioning from OYSA and being denied, it looks like the group has several options to apply here:

        1. Find out what items OYSA found to be incomplete, are bylaw issues, or are a conflict of interest, fix them and resubmit the application.

        2. File for US Club sanctioning. Then file for USYSA sanctioning.

        3. If still turned down, then consider a lawsuit against OYSA using the minutes cited above and any further correspondence, determinations made.

I heard that they just need to change the club's name to Cascade Timbers, pay a small fee to the Timbers, and it is all good.

If you are that dead set against the Timbers, the bigger question is will you also stay far away from going to Portland Timbers and Thorns games as well?

The Timbers influence over OYSA should alarm everyone. This is not good for soccer and anyone who thinks OPL teams moving back to OYSA is a good idea should pay attention to this. Especially non-Timber clubs.

non-Timber club parent here... definitely watching this activity, and concerned over the near-term problems that are going to arise with the re-split.

                  Huh?

Where does it say that the Timbers made the decision? I know that OYSA has denied applications to other clubs where there wasn't a Timbers club. Could it be the OYSA is tired of seeing 3 team "clubs" pop up around the state? I think everyone can agree that there are too many youth soccer clubs in Oregon.

If you are a Portland Timber's fan and want so subsidize them with money from youth soccer then you should join OYSA. Actually the Timbers are doing fine. The money is all going to MP.

I have spoken to a few people associated with the Timbers and they are actually disgusted with what GW is trying to do.

Is there anything good about GW?

The Timbers is OYSA. I don't agree that there are too many youth soccer clubs in Oregon and apparently there is a club that is trying to form so I don't think you can say that "everyone" everyone agrees that there are too many youth soccer clubs in Oregon.

I live in bend. The "new club" is actually a spin off/break-away of the old club. The board of the new club are all paid employees of the club manager/president (see Bend indoor)...aka serious conflict. This has nothing to do with the Timbers.

                          Didn't Say No

From what I see the application was not denied. It was tabled to allow for the new club to provide additional info. Maybe the club wasn't formed the appropriate way (Non-Profit/For-Profit)?

Are there other professional sports organizations that run the entire youth organization of that sport in the state? NFL? NBA? MLB?

No other MLS teams do this either. Obviously GW is taking advantage of the Oregon's love for the Portland Timbers.
