HS Basketball players have a far better chance of making it to college by not playing in an academy program, fact is their is actually competition in HS basketball that can be an indicator of what you can do at the next level.

Unfortunately HS Soccer is such a poor standard of play college coaches cannot make any qualified judgement about potential recruits with HS play--if they did they would be risking their jobs based on recreational soccer performance

Instead they have the USSF helping them out with the Development Academy level of Soccer all across the country, this gives the a chance to watch the best of the best each week. Nice huh..they may slum to watch a club game..but fewer and fewer are electing to even do that. It's all Academy, much like the days of past when it was all ODP.

          Massive

Just a massive tryout yesterday at the Timbers DA. It seems like every 95,96,97,98 and a few 99's was there trying to get one of these spots. Good luck today guys.

Very impressive showing, it just shows that while a few people on this board complain most players want to play for AS and MS and there parents think they are great role modles. It also shows most people believe this is the path to college soccer or even better the pros.

Club soccer it still a good option but really just for fun and the D3 player.

After the u15/u16 year when you lose the only player in Oregon history to be named Captain of the US youth National team and sign with a professional team in the Dutch Eredivisie that one team perhaps isn't as dominant as they once were. Kinda of like the NBA Bulls losing Micheal Jordan--different team still very good, but not NBA Champion good.

Not a single player trying out for the Academy teams 'want' to play for Adam Smith or Mike Smith, no parent has ever remarked about them being 'great' role models.

MY KID WANTS TO PLAY FOR THE PORTLAND TIMBERS & PLAY AGAINST THE BEST YOUTH IN USA. END OF STORY.

They could of named Gavin Wilkinson an academy coach, we would still tryout.

You must have gone through the "new math" program in school which had catastrophic results for many.

Anyhow, you must mean that FC Portland's Smiths were responsible for "placing"their FC players in the DA? Doesn't add up.

I just love it when the Portland geniuses show there lack of knowledge...I have added the out of Portland team names for the sake of balance. It is interesting to note setting aside the Galacticos players at U16 (I believe their coach was the primary selector at the try outs?) The picture is much more balanced. In fact at u18 you have 6 WS players, 5 Cascade FC, AND 4 FC Portland.

Just had to pierce this bubble of WSM greatness that seems to be filling the room...

Yeah. Don't count Galacticos players because they only made it because of favoritism. They really didn't have any good players that deserved to be on the team. Eastside didn't have any favoritism from Underwood; just the Galacticos. I know, lets look at regional champions over the past 10 years to see who produces the best teams, but don't count Cal South because the refs always favor them.

                      Puh leeez

If there was bias it was primarily in favor of those who were established ODP participants. There weren't any Galacticos on the U18 team. Several tried out, but only Michaelson was selected and he never joined. He was a long time ODP guy. The Galacticos players selected for the U16 team were all long time Oregon ODP participants with the exception of one. Their former coach assisted the 18s not the 16s so it doesn't look like he favored his former players at all since none of them were on the team.

                            ?

Did the kids that only played 7 league games come back out. Do we know if the Timbers are going to take smaller rosters. Really if only one is several hundreds will be the next pro why take kids that will ride the bleachers. They are not playing that many games to have to worry about injuries.

Other than the fact that the tryouts didn't work that way. He was focused on the 18s and that's who he watched. Or at least that's what he said. Maybe he was making it up or maybe you know everything. I think I will go with what he did and said before, during and after the process.

Apparently that comment must have hit a sore spot...Take a deep breath...Relax...Count to Twenty...Relax. Sometimes when things hit to close to home it stings.
