It's too easy to say someone has NOT developed anyone. Who can you say HAS developed someone?

Not talking about developing individuals. Too many factors go into that like natural athleticism, time spent on the ball outside of practice, etc.. I’m referring to developing the team. You can watch a game and see which coaches are developing teams.

It's good to understand what each means when talking development. It can be hard to compare apples to apples. Thanks for clarifying.

RJ wants them to move with him. He had his daughter have a zoom call with the team (at least the ones he wants to keep) and ask them to move with him. This is why he got fired. The majority of the team hates him and is happy he is gone. Only 2 current thorns players have said they will go. The rest of the team is staying or looking at other clubs.

Shameful hire by NWE/Surf. Ryan Johnson has a terrible reputation in youth soccer, the worst in recent memory. He's involved for all the wrong reasons, it shows and everyone even remotely involved in the game knows this. Lloyd Fobi and Linus were faced with a decision to do the right thing for youth soccer, the club and most importantly to protect these young girls. They did the exact opposite to hook up Lloyd's friend from college. The good ol' boys club is alive and well. They can say all the right things on the website and on conference calls but it's your actions that define who you are and this is a new low, even in the messy world of youth sports. To put self interest and nepotism ahead of the best interests of children is absolutely despicable. I'm surprised that these guys would destroy their own reputations for RJ. Any reasonable person can see that this will end very badly. What is the point of having a board if they don't take action now? This decision goes against everything the club claims to stand for, they need to stand up and do the right thing. Override this reckless decision! If they don't and Ryan has even an ounce of integrity, he will check his ego, recognize his failures, and resign.

United, Thorns, and Columbia Premiere are really placing a ton of OR/WA boys and girls into next level college soccer in all divisions. 20+ kids in their senior classes. Oregon Surf posts less than 10 college commits total for their seniors. Been a bit distracted trying to assemble college friends in coaching roles.

The answer from Oregon Surf for how things are going to improve appears to be:

A technical leader just for girls but not for boys.

3 of their new ECNL or Pre ECNL girls head coaches have never coached girls teams before

3 of their new ECNL or Pre ECNL girls head coaches have never coached in ECNL ECRL GA or E64 before

Based on this thread it sounds like more than one are coaching their own kid and 2 have been fired in the last year from another club for toxicity.

Rumor has it that they are going to do a wholesale change of players as much as possible and Fobi and Johnson are the main proponents of this change. Sadly, most of your daughters will be asked to step down into lower teams and this will cause a lot of drama. Short term “gains” will cause this club huge long term “pains”. Get your popcorn folks we are only 2 weeks away from all the fireworks!

This is absurd fearmongering. Period. There is not enough talent in Oregon to do a wholesale change at any level at Surf. You aren't getting waves of Thorns to come over from a winning club to a losing club. And there isn't enough talent outside of ECNL in Oregon to make a major difference at any age except maybe the 08s. RJ and LF are not the master recruiters that they think they are (and that you seem to think they are). They are salesmen. Will there be turnover at each team? Yes, of course. At both Surf and Thorns. That's how it works at the ECNL level of soccer everywhere, every year. The bottom 2-5 should be dropped to make way for players that can fight for a starting spot.

United girls are d3 and Midwest d2 (open to all) this grad class and next. Their college recruiting is out the window. Their best team, their 07s, have hardly anything lined up. We left the club, final straw, after the head coach said he had no idea how to help us get to college other than calling his friends at other clubs. We just left and went to those clubs that he mentioned.

Families and players on both sides saw the sh!tshow for what it is and the Thorns came out ahead. The biggest loser here is the daughter who should be getting ready for the National Playoffs with her team, but is instead drowning in the Surf with daddy the screamer.

It worked out just fine. Daughter will play up on the 09 team and RJ will take over as coach.
