    Timbers fire Gio Savaresse.

He doesn't deserve all the blame for the dumpster fire at Prov Park, but the 0-5 thumping at Houston yesterday was the last straw.

Hopefully the next guy can bring a decent academy.

Don’t worry dad, his first call will be to ask if your son will join them, it was a clean and obvious error he got cut from Discovery.

If I had my druthers Gio would have the option of sticking around for 1 - 2 years to create an actual academy.

Not sure if the issues with TA were related to the coach, or were higher up. I suspect the latter.

Gio, like most MLS coaches, have little or no interest in the club's academy and its long-term success.

MLS coaches have about a 3-4 year lifespan with a team, so it is inconsequential for them if a player comes in at 13 years old who MIGHT develop into a first team player. They need players who will contribute and compete immediately.

Academy structure, investment, and prioritization comes from owners (and can be influenced by GMs). The Timbers will never prioritize the academy with Merritt as the owner. They will sign second tier South Americans and Europeans instead investing in the academy.
