Gio, like most MLS coaches, have little or no interest in the club's academy and its long-term success.
MLS coaches have about a 3-4 year lifespan with a team, so it is inconsequential for them if a player comes in at 13 years old who MIGHT develop into a first team player. They need players who will contribute and compete immediately.
Academy structure, investment, and prioritization comes from owners (and can be influenced by GMs). The Timbers will never prioritize the academy with Merritt as the owner. They will sign second tier South Americans and Europeans instead investing in the academy.
