    Odp

I seriously don't understand the selection process for ODP. I know there were many threads regarding ODP, but I just can't understand how most of these players are chosen. It is frustrating and puzzling to both parents and kids.

At some (not all) of the older age groups it is because the better players don't want to participate anymore.

Or because when you start adding up all the costs, it's too much money spent!

I only had my son participate in odp this year so he'd have a better chance at making the academy next year. Erik sent out an email stating that over 90% of the selection process comes from the odp roster. We will see if this holds true. I will be upset if over 90% is from elsewhere!!!

Time and money are both issues that have been a problem for my child.

It gets old to miss every holiday and in the past year the structure of ODP cratered. If you don't even get a chance to compete and play with the entire region then what is the point? This past year Southern Ca and Washington worked up some sort of deal that did not include the remainder of the region.

Top that off with the selection process being undermined by choosing individuals for the regional pool that did not participate at the state level and didn't have to miss their Fourth of July in order to be in the pool (or pay $1000 extra ) and it financially does not make sense anymore. My child basically summed it up with "if they want me they know where to find me but I have no desire to go to their regional camp anymore".

No to mention the kids that went to the national team camp w/o participating in the hold over camp! Undermines the process and the kids aren't dumb!

Which selections are you referring to? Being selected to RTC, to the state pool, to regional holdover, being selected to the tournament team, ....?

I hear ya. My player summed it when she said "if they don't value their own selection process then why should I?"

As it turns out you do not have to do state ODP which cost a minimum of $1000 for the championship, uniform and friendship cup. You do not have to go to regional camp as you can be chosen anyway saving your parents $700+. Then you go to the holdover camp at an additional expense ($400) .... Seriously, if they want you they will skip the state and the regional camp part and call you straight to holdover camp at a savings of approximately $1500+.

My DD chose ECNL in lieu of ODP this year and we don't regret it.

                  I love your daughter's quote!!

We weren't happy last year with the way they selected their RTC team. Seemed to be partially prechosen after the first few practices. Not to mention the cost involved.

RTC, State pool, regional camp, NO holdover camp, then selected in to national team camp ... in other words, they go through the process, don't make it past regional camp by not being selected to holdover camp, but then show up on a list of kids that participated in the national team camp....at least 2 went that route this year on the boys' side. First eligible year through the ODP process to make it to the national team camp.

Unless the player is benefiting as a player (ie, getting better) through ODP participation it should not matter one bit whether the player has prior ODP experience. The DA should select the players who either are or have the potential to be top players. While those two things (ODP and being a top player) can go together, they don't necessarily have to. There are many players who don't do ODP for one reason or another that are just as deserving of a fair look during DA selection than those who chose to support ODP. Not that I think it would happen, but if 90% of the selection was outside ODP but nonetheless deserving of selection, the only reason you'd have for being upset is that you got hooked for money by ODP/Timbers and that's the problem.

I thought the boys side was fairly spot on, meaning the top 18 made the State team. Had I been making the selections, I probably would have chosen 2 or 3 differently but splittling hairs at that point.

The process is very expensive though. Makes my family think twice this go around.

                            Got it.

I have to say, ODP is VERY inconsistent with their rules and how things get applied. There are the stated rules, then there are all sorts of exceptions to those rules, then even more, back door dealings which result in more exceptions.

The Timbers would do everyone a favor if they just set the rules and applied them consistently and equally. But they don't, and then they wonder why so many people are disgruntled.

This is the kind of thing that PISSES me off. Don't make it to holdover yet attend National Camp? What sort of b.s. is this? Are you sure about this? I don't know any boy from the 97 or 98 squad that went to National Camp this route.
