The DA league came out and the thorns told everyone they were a pathway to pros and to leave your teams and come to them.

Present day: their two oldest teams 03 and 04 couldn’t field enough players for showcases and the commits they had were from players who were already committed and decided to try the thorns out their senior year to clearly leave or not show up.

I think he's quickly earning a reputation around the 09 ECNL as THE awful coach. He's controlling everything they do on the field and constantly upset with them. Has no idea what he is DOING TO THEM short and long term, including the one closest to him. These futsal players, if they are really good are heading the wrong way. He doesn't celebrate technical ability or free thought or creativity. They'd be better at FC Portland if they were still going to be in ECNL because they could at least think and play there. He's going to command them around, put them down and drive out their creative spirit. We don't need these coaches in youth sports. Pay attention to the mental health issues happening at the collegiate level for goodness sake!

What is it with some of the Thorns coaches constantly yelling directions to the players?
Try to imagine completing any task with someone over your shoulder yelling at you to do it differently or telling you how to do it while a crowd watches your every move.

Would that make you nervous? Now imagine being 11/12/13 year old girls and trying to learn an extremely complicated difficult sport while some soccer bum flunkie relives his glory days by yelling as loud as possible at you.

If after 1 game you see a coach acting this way, you should grab your daughter and run as fast and far away from this d&ckhead as possible. We tell adults to not stand for abusive bosses, spouses, etc.. why would you let your children be treated this way?

I can’t even believe what some of the local “elite” coaches do in the sidelines. It’s insane. But some parents put up with and as long as that continues it just rewards and reinforces bad coaching behavior.

I wasn't at that game but on another field at the same time and heard fromanotherparent. From what I could gather one of his players was fouled pretty hard in the box and could have been injured. The same two players were involved in a similar incident earlier in the season and it resulted in a substantial injury to his player

Not true. I was at game. There was no foul (the mentor referee agreed with the no call), and the play occurred outside the box. It was a physical game on BOTH sides, but it was clear Esteban was frustrated, lost control and told the young female ref she had no business working the game and didn’t stop after the yellow card. Not exactly an example I’d want my U11 daughter around.

Was considering having my daughter tryout of the the Pre-ECNL team today/tomorrow, but then I heard something about their coach getting a red card yesterday. Seems concerning at a U11 game.
Anyone know more about that?

Run as fast as you can. I’d rather have my daughter play for a coach who doesn’t lose his $h*t on a referee (woman no less). Pathetic in every sense of the word even if it was a foul.

So much for development, best training, etc all the other BS lies that are sold with ECNL. Think about all the years they were told the same BS and now look at the state of their teams and club.

I think the Thorns Academy take the wrong things too seriously. Don't get me wrong. I hate losing. But at the young ages, it really is more important to develop skill and confidence. If the club prioritizes winning so much that this kind of coaching is tolerated, they inevitably sacrifice development. And, most tragically, they risk destroying confidence in young players. Yes, young kids can take soccer very seriously. They will put enough pressure on themselves. They don't need coaches screaming at them or screaming at referees.
