Stupid parents

Now that we have state cup out of the way.... we get all these post from stupid parents wanting to stick their chest out (or breast:) ) about how excellent their clubs are. Whether it's about how many FC teams were in the finals, or yeah Thusc had only one state champion but X number of teams in the semi's, or how bad WSM is because they had only one state champion, etc... A great example of this stupidness is the U14G thread. Now that the hated team of Usonians won state cup again, now they are bashing them because they probably can't compete in Washington or California. I could go on and on....
Here's the bottom line:
1. Tough to compete in the early ages Regionally due to the number of clubs in our small area.
2. Easier at the older ages because eventually teams consolidate. Just look at the number of teams competing in the older ages and the success these teams have at Surf, Nomads, etc...
3. All the players are pretty cool, it's the adults who are nuts.
4. Oregon girls soccer is changing big time, adults resist it, especially parents of DD who are in the average to below average caliber. If you have a DD who is an impact player, you want her to be with the best and play only with the best; thus these parents will welcome the change that is upon us.
5. The model of Pay to Play will likely never change and that's why on the men's side, they will never win a World Cup and on the women's side, they are losing the edge in world stage.

pay to play exists, of course. But the Portland Timbers are communicating that it is their goal to have the best players play free of charge by the time they get to the Academy teams. Travel costs too. Don't think we are there yet, but the more popular the Timbers get, the more $ they have. And they do NOT want to lose out on a player in their territory simply because they cannot pay to play. times are changing. And things are different this time. I have watched from childhood back to the NASL days. This is different. This is real. As soccer heads towards critical mass in the U.S., opportunity for those with less $ will improve. But his is a process, it will take time.

Problem is Academy teams don't start until U16 and by then you've already lost a huge group of kids due to the "pay to play" scenario.

Agree with point 4. My DD would love to have the opportunity to tryout for a team that is made up of the best players. And not ODP, we've done that and it isn't the same thing. I'm talking about a great team that goes to top tournaments to see how a collection of the top players fares against top teams from the West. This is no guarantee that she would make the team or if the team would compare against top teams, but it would be nice to have that chance.

That's why there is a $100 try out fee for the DA and if you get past the first weekend you are "strongly encouraged" to go to their for charge residential camp and then, if you make the team you get to come up with a $500 deposit. That's a thousand bucks in the new "no pay to play" world. It will take a while to get past the ingrained money grab habits.

ODP is just as bad and even more disorganized. Players need an OYSA card that you have to pay for in advance. They need to bring cash to the Friendship Cup or you can't play. Families need to keep Memorial Day Weekend clear but they won't confirm the teams until shortly beforehand. Then to cap it off the OYSA run Timbers/ODP program scheduled training sessions right at the same time as the OYSA state cup finals.

I have to admit, I was disappointed with the lineup for the Friendship Cup too. At the RTC Tourney to create the state pool I thought that maybe we would get to play Sounders, Galaxay, Earthquakes, and Whitecaps at the age group. No kiddin' The Friendship Cup has become an absolute joke and a complete waste of time. What happened to this tourney over the years? The younger age groups are a joke. It takes money to put on a tourney and after the OPL pulling out there was zip. It is frustrating and is not even a shell of its former self.

I thought the Timbers had money? It is after all the Timbers Friendship Cup. Doesn't explain why the other States pulled out of the tournament. It's pretty bad when the Oregon ODP can't even get Washington to come down and play.
