Here we go again with the idiotic lie-based comments. If WST is "notorious for allowing free rides," then where is your proof? No one gets a free ride at WST. Even financial aid recipients (boys and girls) have to complete applications for aid and attach proof of low earnings, etc. Then you have to wait to see what your family will be awarded. In my too many years to remember, no one has ever received a "full ride" from the club. In fact, the club told us at a managers meeting that we are not to pay or have our team families pay team fees for any aid players.

My kids have received some financial aid when we went through work layoffs. Same routine to apply every year and we still have to pay for uniforms and ant team fees. My oldest daughter played for FC years ago, and my kids did the FC Academy, so I know how both systems work.

Both clubs are credible in distributing aid to players. The only differences that I saw were that club & team payments at FC went through the office, and later, when I was manager, I was surprised to have the team pay my travel fees. This does not happen at WST and we pay our team fees straight to the team.

My son was offered a full ride scholarship from Cony after our team played his U13 team (this was last year). We didn't accept it but it was offered. We were also contacted by two other WST coaches after we declined the offer.

Just because your child was never offered a full ride doesnt mean it doesn't happen. Do they make it public knowledge to all members and managers.....no. It happens and it happens quite often. I know of several kids playing for free when there is no need for it.

This will upset the OSA team and the members of the team (WST, VT, EST) that accepts them. Will they have to share play time or will a member be moved down? Also the "B" team members that have been working hard to make the "A" team. If its just one player it may not make too many waves, but multiple players could. The grass is not always greener on the other side. JMO
So if this is true, will they move a team up to premier in the spring? There should be a Vancouver timbers team there already.

Who knows. All age groups above U11 have only 8 teams playing Premier. There were 10 playing Bu11. I would assume that the bottom 2 would move down and no team would move up. But with OSA breaking up I don't know if the 9th ranked will stay or not. I assume its up to the OPL and DOC of the clubs involved to sort out.

I think you are right in that it will move to an 8 team league. If OSA is gone, and you drop out the 2 bottom teams (BSC and CFC), there is room for 1 more team. Just glancing at it, maybe you move up the Vancouver Timbers since they were #1 and #3 in Div1. Maybe they can combine the best from those 2 teams as well, ceating a highly competitive Premier team. Although there is also the WSA team already in Premier that is merging with the Timbers so not sure how that all works. It will be interesting to see how the powers sort this one out.

Not true. Prove it. I know for a fact that you are wrong. You can call the office and ask them the procedure. If in doubt, contact the financial aid coordinator. No one gets "talented" full rides at WST. No one. Coaches definitely cannot offer free rides before "joining." Don't complete the application process, no consideration for financial aid, period.

FC / WST will be nothing in 5 years if the powers that be at both clubs don't do something about it. And quickly!!!
Neither club is ran[sic] by "lazy people." FC and WST opened the doors to many opportunities for all Oregon clubs to have opportunities from outside of the state. If it weren't for these two clubs and a handful of others that have been around a while and successfully able to promote the talent in the area, many colleges would not know about our student athletes. Many players would do ODP here and there, often quitting it, but continuing their club experiences and doing well in college.

Do not believe the lies spread here about "scholarships." Ask to attend a board meeting to see how financial aid is distributed. Soccer most definitely is a learning experience and so it is at these clubs, period.

I cannot count how many times over the years that people have lied about what Cony has said. He will be the first one to tell you and your player to contact the office or the financial aid coordinator to see how to apply for aid. He cannot offer anything to a player because it is not his decision. No other coaches can offer you anything either.

WST has strict policies in place. Ask them. No it does not happen the way that you describe. When people claim that coaches offer free spot on teams they quickly learn that it doesn't happen that way. You all have to pay to play.

Even the Timbers academy staff will admit there is no curriculum. Each coach is doing their own thing from the Academy down to the alliance clubs. If you think the alliance is some unified system of doing things you are horribly mistaken.

The timbers have no proven system. Hopefully Porter will change all of that, but I am not convinced he can wrestle control away from the good ol' boys club.
Very very true !! I am an academy coach and we are given no curriculum !! We are required to be a nationally or state licensed coach and use what we feel is appropriate training for the age group we are assigned during Timbers camps and training sessions that parents "pay for" the gentleman who wrote the initial post is absolutely absurd.

                        OSA Forza?

I see that OSA has two U11B teams registered for Spring League. However, I had heard that the U11s at OSA disbanded. Any insight into what is happening with that group?

Where are you seeing that? I don't see anything on the OPL website yet about spring. They did have 3 teams in the fall-one in premiere, one in div1 and one in div 3.

Anyway, what I heard is this: OSA Forza parents were frustrated with how the team did in the fall season. (Remember, at the U10 level this team was one of the best.) 2 of the "best" players decided to leave. Mass panic followed and basically the entire OSA Forza team decided to go elsewhere. I heard that some of the players went to WT, some to ET and some went to other clubs (I have heard various rumors). Apparently, so many went to WT (just what I heard, I could be incorrect) that a bunch of the play-ups (true U10's playing U11) were either placed on another WT team (I heard they were asked to play age group-i.e play U 11 again next year). Perhaps someone from OSA, WT or ET could clarify since all of the above is just what I have pieced together from a variety of reliable sources. My son doesn't play for any of the above teams.

If this is true, I think it was a bad move. The OSA Forza team was talented, some very skilled players. For whatever reason, their record probably didn't match their capability. Quite a few close games that they just didn't win. The grass isn't always greener. You go over to WT or ET and now as a kid, you have to prove that you are actually better than established players to get much playing time. I guess the play ups not playing on age may benefit...
