At least at our club, the DOC is more of a club (puppet) manager, taking orders directly from the BOD's that set policy, direction and steer from the rear seat. I'm hoping they don't pay him a lot of money cause they aren't getting much in return as far as management skills from what we "dont" see of him.
I guess I view a DOC as one that holds coaching clinics for rec coaches more then once a year (build from the bottom up), discusses coaching styles with their subordinate classic coaches (before and after each weekends games) to discuss results and changes if necessary and fills in when a coach cannot be in attendance at a practice or game.
They should be setting some sort of goal for each team/coach to ensure that as many players as possible reach the next level of play, either individually or as a team and that goal should be stated to the parents of that team so that some sort of measurement can be reviewed at any time.
They should have some sort of pulse from each classic team under their wings, so that if there is a riff brewing (and we all know this happens everywhere), they can be contacted by their members directly and work quickly to resolve things. (Open Door Policy)
If they are going to recommend a player for some advance training or camp, they should attend more then one training session and be actively involved in it, so that when they put their name on the form, they truly can say they are worthy of it, not just taking the word of the over zealous coach trying to put another notch in their gun belt.
They should be constantly striving to get their older players into the top level tourneys where that team will do it's best in front of as many college coaches or recruiters as possible and offer to parents lists of college coaches they have contact with. To discuss with the players individually (and with the parents) about colleges looking for players and their further interests.
If the player wants to play in college or is working to seek a college scholarship, that DOC should be working to help achieve that goal at all times and stay in constant communications with the family. If the player isn't, then identify what their next step is and move on.
Did I miss anything important ? Probably !!!! But this what I see as an important virtue of the position they hold.
When was the last time you were contacted directly by the DOC at your club and asked of your opinion or comments ?

VUSA Timber 95 Red vs Eugene Metro FC Magic (2-0 VUSA)
WSA Courage vs EUFC Arsenal (2-0 WSA)
Eastside FC 95 Red vs OSSA Blue 95 (4-0 Eastside)
Northwest Nationals 95 Red vs THUSC Sodium (3-0 THUSC)
December 12th

In a nutshell, Eastside is the best team in Washington and Oregon. When they are ON, they will not be beaten. They may very well win every game in this league. Can they be beaten? Yes. But only THUSC looks to have the depth to do it.
ESUFC- who is still on this team, have they found a goalkeeper, can their ODP stud carry them on her back? A long season ahead or will they surprise?
Eugene Metro- hot and cold. never consistant.
VUSA/WSA- some talented Washington girls- those that haven't moved to play for Oregon teams already. WSA's best 3 went to VUSA last year.
OSSA is the old Extreme. Could be very good at times. Have added the better players from Southside and a standout from Eastside of Oregon. A lot of questions about how well this team starts off though.
THUSC is the class of Oregon. Have added several new girls and will not miss a beat this year. The team to beat from Oregon.
NW Nationals- another hot or cold team. Lost several good girls to the "bigger" clubs I heard.
THUSC, OSSA, VUSA and Eastside in the SF round.

I have met with several DOC's so far, and some mostly fit the bill, but not perfectly and with sound repetitiveness. We have both a U14 and U9 player in our house. Time will tell next year when our oldest goes into high school and our youngest should start PDP/YDP/Youth Academy. Im sure that along the way we will make some changes before it's all through.
Were following closely those players, High Schools and Club Teams that have resounding results, both collectively as a team and as individual players. Those that come from the same mold with similar results are generally found at the same club that developed their skill, kept their interests and perfected their talents.

Our DOC is highly involved and can be seen at many, many games through out the club. He is always holding meetings with the parents to voice any concerns they may have and is easily approachable. I've seen him at different practices and he knows just about every kid by name. (if not all)
I would think if you were not getting the same from your DOC you may want to email or call him/her. Express your concerns and see if anything changes.

Wa Courage vs ESUFC Arsenal 1-0
Arsenal had their first NWCL game Saturday in Camas. Unfortunately my daughter was not there but it sounded like it was a good game overall. Arsenal stuck in there in spite of using field players in the goal and having an almost half new roster. While I obviously would have preferred Arsenal to have won, I for one want to say "Good Job Ladies" for hanging in there and playing good soccer!!!!!! Go Arsenal.
