What makes a player want to not play for the top team

What makes a player not want to be a starter on the top team in their area but rather be the stud of a 2nd level team that can not compete with the top team in the area?

    Is it the coach? Club?

Or is it the parent has to pump the chest and say they are the best player on an average team.

It always amazes me to see a weak team with 1 player that is heads and shoulders above the rest to the point that everything has to go thru him/her. Why stay when you can go be a starter on the top team and help elevate them more.

Maybe it is the attitudes of the players on the top team.

You sound like the parent you speak of, maybe the player just enjoys playing where they are with no, to little pressure. Maybe they cant or wont travel any farther. This is probably the dumbest question ever posed on this site, and that in its self is quite a feat.

If it's your kid, then ask her/him.

If it's not your kid, then it's none of your darned business.

This sounds like a coach that is feeling some heat, and doing some recruiting/ legal poaching, by your statement you are with the "better team" since you said "To see a player on an average team etc. etc." and maybe the good player does not want to help the other team "elevate", maybe just maybe they see a coach blessed with nothing but talent that may out grow his coaching ability, and maybe they want no pressure and just want to have fun. I know its hard to understand when your with a "top team" that some good players other places are just wanting to have fun. I do agree with a earlier post this is a stupid question.

Yeah, how dare that kid be happy and having fun playing soccer. They should join our elite team where they can be miserable surrounding themselves with people like myself and my spoiled little brat who never passes the ball.

There is a difference between actually playing an important role on a good team, and warming the bench on a top team. It is called FUN. That is what your kid is supposed to be having. If you have never played sports, you wouldn't understand.

                      smart kid

Sounds like the kid has it all figured out and the parents of the other team are just baffled by it............maybe you should learn something from this. Sounds like the parents of this player are pretty grounded as well - maybe you should learn something from that too.

What soccer team you play on doesn't define who you are as a player or person - Your actions do.

It makes me feel like a successful parent when my chlds soccer team wins. I like to watch them crush other 10 year olds. I wish I could crush them myself.

Why would they pass, everyone else is no good, and when they do pass, they NEVER get it in return.

I agree. I had one of those kids. He was/is very talented and loves the game with all his heart. He tried the high level team, did very well, but hated all the high nose kids with the typical parents on the team and just didn't enjoy playing for them. He left and went to another club, which wasn't the best club in the city. They did well, he wasn't the only talent on the team. He did several college tryouts with several offers, but chose the small school over the bigger ones because he wants to play and enjoy it, not have it consume his life and be so stressed that he didn't love playing anymore. At first I was trying to push him to "be all he could be", but learned that it is his decision and respect him for it. He is still in college, but now just plays adult league and intramural at school, and he coaches and trains too. I can only hope the kids he trains learn to love the game the way he does; which I think is the case, as his phone is always ringing with a coach or player wanting him to train them.
In the long run, keeping their love of the game is the most important part, for us anyway.

                              Because:

                              The Coach is an ***
The other players are spoiled selfish turds
                              Cost
                              Friends on team
                              Location
                              Play time

Have watched 2 top teams fall apart in my area the last year because of all of those reasons listed. As others have mentioned when it becomes a job and a chore to participate its time to take a step back. Its about having fun.
