Davie was lucky to get past CG. They were outplayed the whole game.

Girl's soccer is a social activity. On a roster of 18 ECNL girl’s players, at any age, you would be hard pressed to find a quarter of those players with a pumped up ball in their garage unless they have to bring one to practice. Very few high level female players train on their own. Boys do. The majority of female players do sports to be with their friends. My daughter played on a USYS team where almost all the girls played D-I. They were National Champs. Very few of those players did much beyond what was required of just being on the team.

It is a struggle to watch the NWSL or NBA and even worse at the youth level.

They Hyperbole in this post is impressive! It would be difficult to find 1/4 of an ECNL team with a pumped up soccer ball? Very few high level female players train on their own? Your kid played on a National Championship team and the girls didn't do much beyond what was required?

              Come on.

Boys soccer is a gathering place for the males who could not quite cut it in one of the more popular sports that offer significantly better opportunities. They tend to choose soccer over other sports because it is part of a pay for play system. Daddy's money allows them to compete against the other country club kids and avoid the riff-raff of some "public program". Imagine having to compete against a kid who actually struggles in life and views sports as his only way out of poverty. These little snowflakes would not cut it...fortunately there is US soccer for them. A sport of privilege, where mommy and daddy can brag about how awesome little Jake or Tanner or Logan is playing against other little snowflakes.

Watching boys soccer (in the US) is pathetic...they are 3rd rate athletes who have been lucky enough to have a niche created for them by the US club system. I'm sorry poors, but you already have your sports...leave soccer for the whit...I mean "dedicated" kids...wink, wink.

Interesting article. Of course these are younger girls vs boys. Once you hit HS age it becomes nearly impossible for girls to match the physicality of boys. But there were two interesting quotes

“I always try to show that soccer isn’t just for boys,” Gómez said. “If you’re technically better, you can compensate for being perhaps physically weaker.”

Also to make the case for girls to train with boys, as several WNT did when they were younger

“To push these girls, we felt they had to play against boys because you need strong opponents to make real progress,” said José María Salmerón, the club’s general director. AEM took advantage of a Spanish soccer federation rule that allows clubs to field players of any sex — including mixed teams that combine boys and girls — for junior league competitions until age 14.

On another note I saw a few minutes of an NWSL game on Lifetime yesterday....painful. Our WNT may be tops in the world but they will be hard pressed to build a fan base at that level. I think there were 100 people in the stands.

I want to emphasize that my original question had little to do with matching the physicality of boys. That wouldn't make sense just based on biology. My observation just seemed to be that the girls games, even at the higher ages, just wasn't the skill level that I expected for high level teams. Purely from a technical perspective. Very little ability to dribble with head up, no rollover, or chops at speed, or settling a long pass with the foot. Little headers with purpose (i.e. at a player). And if a player is one on one with another with space you won't see much beyond an attempt to outrun.

Perhaps it's because girls are so much more willing to focus on playing as part of the team than boys? The individual skill set seems to be drilled out them?

and btw, I tried watching the OC Pride game online. I lasted about 10 minutes

I do believe this used to be the case, soccer was for the athletic girls and those that thrive on intense physical competition, but there wasn't much emphasis on a high level game. And for most girls it is a social thing. But I'm telling you, now at the 10, 11, 12, 13 year old ages, there is some dedication to becoming really good. There will be some really good US women soccer players in the not too distant future. The tough part will be to see if they can handle the pressure placed on them by their parents to be better than everyone else. For some, it starts to fall apart around age 13 for this reason. Also, there is still a need for coaches at the high level who are into the smart soccer game. It really is discouraged sometimes by coaches who were great players in the day before soccer skill really existed in the US and it was predominantly a physical thing. Parents, if you have one of these skilled players who sits the bench, keep looking for the right coach and find things like futsol and other opportunities to keep developing that skill. It will pay off one day if they want to be high level players.

Keep crying while Davie is still in every single final, either winning or losing, but every single final has Davie in it.
