So true. Premier soccer in RI is typically a money grab by ex "players" who are taking advantage of all the soccer moms who want to walk around in club gear. Most of the kids have no resemblance to "premier" players. Every once in a while you get a team that really resembles an all-star premier team but most only have a few players of that caliber because the talent is too spread around. Talk to someone who was at SRI when the second premier club was approved years ago and they will tell you it may have been the worst decision in the history of SRI. It wrecked youth soccer by making it more expensive (thereby exclusive) for all of us. If you had one premier club with maybe two teams per age group RI might actually be competitive beyond its borders. That would also be representative of the true number of kids each year who may go on to play in college. The challenge would be finding coaches. There are way too many clowns out there that have no idea how to actually develop kids. Absent a new super club being formed (not happening) the only clubs with the structure to pull it off would be NEFC or GPS. They are far better run and organized than anyone else around here. They may not have the best RI players today, but there is no question they have the best structure and leadership. Over time parents will gravitate to these clubs because of that.

Totally agreed. However I am still hoping Rhody can put their differences aside an work toward creating a platform for a true club that can compete with the Mass super clubs. The closest club being competitive but lack the consistency is Bayside FC. They have the DA U12 on the boys side and NPL on the girls. Over they years they could have benefited for a greater influx of players to tweet out the weaker players on the teams. Not I also know nepotism is Bayside weakness. They done a good job at developing players at the younger age group then somehow peaked at U15.

NEFC & Stars already have the best RI girls on them, and Revs, Bolts and NEFC have the best boys. Good luck getting them back. RI premier is now simply a feeder region for the top MA teams. No shame in that. Same is true for NH, ME and VT.

Bruno boys are not in NPL and could very well be in trouble with some of the groups 13 and 15 to start. Bayside is the only RI club that is a full member.

That one hour a week of training all winter is doing wonders for the players and coaches. Maybe if someone took less $$$ and invested in a second day a week they would have a better start to the spring.

I can't see any Bruno Boys teams in NPL next season. Going to lose its best players to Bayside this summer and these struggling teams will be even worse off in the fall. JT really did a number on this club.

Bruno is not very good at developing players. On the boys side how many DA players have they produced and how many ECNL or DA players on the girls side? I must admit they are a comfort club for many parents who wanted their kids to play premier. Although they have continue to grow they have never moved beyond playing second fiddle to the other RI club. With reemerging of Blackwatch (NEFC South) and GPS who knows where Bruno will end up in 3 years.

I don't know much about the girls side but the boys side I still think Bruno is the second tier for boys soccer in RI. Bayside sits on top and with the U12 DA that will only continue. For example next year 04 for bayside will go from worst to first once they add the DA boys to the group and that trend will continue every year. If southern RI could ever get it together they would be a force at every age. Don't know why those guys aren't together with URI connections. GPS South, Rams and NEFC South County all grabbing player from each other make zero sense and proves that egos and $$$ ruin the youth game.

The NEFC RI propaganda on this site is laughable. To argue they are competitors with bruno and bayside is unfair. Regardless of there standings in NEP which are avarage you need to remember that 14 teams play in NPL league and 4 DA clubs with in 100 miles. They are litteraly playing below avagre teams.

By the way notice the gap in age groups very much like the old blackwatch. When it's most important time to play club soccer no teams to play on. Was always the case with BWP. No $$$ at older age groups so why would I waste my time is and has always been SC MO.

The notion of "a RI club" or a "Mass club" holds no water in premier soccer. Players are not bound by state boundaries as to where they can play. Clubs are not limited to a specific state as to where they can draw players from. All premier clubs have the same opportunities to build their programs regardless of what state they are based. All players are free to play for any club regardless of what state they live in.

I am almost positive the poster uses the term RI Club meaning the train and play in RI like Bayside, Rams, Luistana ect. I agree players can come and go as they please and don't think anyone was debating that fact.

RI Clubs will never merge and form ""super"" teams to compete. It's all about $ and everyone wants a piece of it. Only way it could happen is of town associations got together and formed "super" teams, but I think even that train has left the station with very little town soccer programs doing anything productive except for maybe South County, Smithfield and Maybe Cumberland and Ocean State. The rest are just churning out glorified Rec players and teams. Don't get me wrong, other towns do have the occasional one-off stud player or maybe even a team but no consistency at all.

Smithfield? What leagues to they play in? I don't recall seeing them playing in the mighty Superliga.
