    RI College Soccer Scene

With all the recent coaching moves in the world of RI college basketball i.e. PC URI and Brown Men’s and PC and URI women what are some off the changes we can expect on the soccer scene.

    Men’s College Soccer

Brown Bears - Pat Laughlin has done a great job with Mike Noonan’s (Clemson) left over’s and I think will maintain the level of recruiting needed to compete in the Ivy League and Nationally.

Bryant Bulldog’s - Seamus Purcell after a dismal 2-13-1 season and a combined 12-49-5 in his first four season at the D1 Level I think it’s safe to say coach Seamus is in the hot seat.

Providence Friars - 1st year head coach Craig Stewart will be under the microscope replacing long time coach Chaka Daley (Michigan) and maintaining PC Big East contender status.

URI Rams - John O’Connor will have much to prove in the next two seasons under his extension. He seemed to ride Bradley’s boys to A10 stardom but has since failed both in conference and on the recruiting trail.

    Women’s College Soccer

Brown Bears - Phil Pincince Has had a long career at brown maybe to long after 34 season and lots of success in the 1990’s browns women have been on the decline finishing below 500 2 of the last three years in the Ivy league 6-12-5.

Bryant Bulldogs - Chris Flint’s bulldogs saw much improved marks in the past season and look to be headed in the right direction. But with a combined record of 22-43-10 over the last 4 years it won’t take to many 5 win seasons to have Bryant AD’s thinking coaching change.

Providence Friars - Jim McGirr received a two year extension after reaching the Big East Tournament for the first time in his seven seasons. Although he has show improved mark from his first three seasons at the helm his conference record is still a sore spot at 15-42-9 with his best season of 5-6 in 2011.

URI Rams - Mike Needham in his first season has shown some improvement from the Shaw era and should get at least three to four more seasons to prove his worth in the A10.

    this is an easy one!

Men ~ O'Connor is out at URI needs to make A10 Semi in next two years or else. I will even go as far to perdict Garoth Elliot will replace him. Seamus is done At Bryant needs to go 500 in conf and make tournament. With 13 returning players and 8 frosh dont see it. John Mark Andrade will replace him close to BS the AD at Bryant and coaches his daughter now at Bayside. And has the Bayside Pipeline which did very well for PC. Pat and Craig will be good for the next four years!

Women ~ Phil will be forced out wont get fired will resign rumor is his Asst Luis is inline for J&W Mens Job. national search for new Brown coach. I think Jim is going to have a tough time getting back into the Big East Tournament and def will not finish over 500 in BE. Won't get an extension. Chris better build on last year but I think he will remain 500 and shoulde be good for a new contract soon. Mike well must say I dont know much about him but they kept the shaws around for a while I think he will improve the program should have some west coast players coming in!

Why no D3 those are the coaches who really need to be evaluated! RIC girls and J&W boys are BAD!!!

Bryant needs a coach who is more of a recruiter if they are to get anywhere. Tough to win when all you get are players who did not make it elsewhere. Not a fault of Seamus IMO.

I think Bryant's coaches get a pass until the full D1 certification happens, especially on the girls' side..just seeing now the better D1 caliber (even if on lower end) kids..but agree the men's side with JMA is a possibility given the trend..

          What can you expect

Its got to be hard to recruit into URI and Bryant, they don't have the appeal that PC and Brown have, there's really very little scholarship money available. A coworker's son is a D1 athlete in a non-money sport, he used the athletics to get him into a school which he otherwise never would have qualified.

This sort of seems like the PC basketball situation, where everyone expects so much of them, but reality is that it is hard to recruit.

My son has been at camps at both Bryant and URI, they seem really good, Seamus and John are heavily involved. I'm sure other coaches would be good too, but I'm thinking that the totality of what they bring to the state matters too.

It's not like these guys get paid what Jim Baron was making!

It's also got to be tough for RI schools being so close to so many top notch schools right next door in MA and CT.

It's always difficult to compete for good recruits, but that didn't get in the way of Ed Bradley doing it consistently, and Geza Henni having some good years as well; often a mix of terrific local talent, and some top notch foreigners from the UK and the Carribean. The top D1 schools are littered with foreigners, but that's not a necessity. Its says as much about those school wanting to enrich and develop the student body with a diverse mix of students.

A good college coach should be able to take good soccer players, that are D1 athetic and motivated to form a good team. Without no real professional league draw, the vast majority of college soccer players are available to college coaches for 4-5 years, for 6-9 months each year. You would think in that time even very raw talent could be molded into the coaches vision. Certainly doesn't happen overnight, but you should see trending improvement during the 3rd through 5th year.

Absolutely many good ones and a great choice for many kids who end up going to D2 or D1 and sit the bench for 3-4 years.
