    Surf Long Island Tryouts

    Based on significant interest expressed over the past week by Suffolk-based players, which we believe is a result of the recent activity in Suffolk County soccer, Surf has decided to hold Suffolk-based tryouts for new Suffolk-based G00-G03 teams during the weeks of June 6th & June 13th. If interested, please register asap at http://members.nysurfsoccer.org.

    We had previously been planning to wait until the 2017-2018 season, the inaugural Girls Development Academy season, to launch our Suffolk-based program. However we unexpectedly have received significant interest from these age groups from Suffolk-based players, so we have decided to explore the possibility of launching these teams for the 2016-2017 season. If we receive enough high quality players at these tryouts (as we fully believe will be the case), these Suffolk-based teams will be formed for the 2016-2017 season, and top G00/G01 players will commence training in early July in preparation for the 2016 Surf Cup, which they will attend at the end of July in San Diego.

    NY Surf’s goal is to become the best player development club in the greater New York area, and expanding to Long Island, which is one of the biggest soccer talent pools in the country, is a logical extension of our club.

    We are also open to discussing a limited number of partnerships with smaller Premier clubs and community-based travel clubs. If your club is interested in exploring a NY Surf partnership, please email president@nysurfsoccer.org.

    Smart marketing - come tryout and join our new NY club which has zero teams and zero history on the East Coast, AND by the end of July we will allow you come to San Diego and compete at a famous tournament. Great sweetener.

        There is a lot of low hanging fruit out on Long Island. It may have one of the "biggest player pools" but the clubs out there tend to be a mess. They may do better out there then trying to penetrate the Westchester/immediate NYC area, at least at first.

          They are firing up the Suffolk program a year early for the sole reason of recruiting the ISA girls unhappy with the thought of playing for SUSA. The big question at the moment is where in Suffolk and who the trainers are going to be.

            NY Surf president lives in mamaroneck which is why he's basing the club in mamaroneck. But seems like long island needs more help.

            I remember when nysc was started up by some wealthy fellow. He got reyna to be a founder and their first few DOCs were men who moved on to US National team duties. There were always rumors that he a lot of land in bedford that were going to be turned into a soccer field complex but that never materialized and the super duper soccer men he had have all left (reyna to nycfc, bookman to somewhere else and the Spaniard to the national organization). They were replaced by local guys who peaked as players and coaches with local colleges.

              Club comparison.

              Mamaroneck: 29 travel teams in the WYSL;
              Larchmont: 31 travel teams in the WYSL;
              Westchester Soccer Club: 3 travel teams in the WYSL;
              Source: (http://www.wyslsoccer.org/about/clubs)

              Each of the clubs also has 2 or 3 teams playing in the NYCSL.

              In addition, the Mamaroneck and Larchmont clubs run separate self-contained recreation leagues with a couple hundred kids in each. Westchester does not have this.

              The Mamaroneck and Larchmont travel teams practice 2x a week with single games on the weekend. The recreation leagues play single games on weekends and practice once a week.

              Larchmont and Mamaroneck clubs have existed for 15+ years each. WSC was created 2 years ago.

              Larchmont and Mamaroneck travel teams have varying costs based on their use or non-use of professional trainers. With a trainer doing everything the cost is $1000-$1200 for 3 seasons but with parent coaches, the cost may be $500. Rec leagues cost $100-$140 per kid.

              WSC charges $2500-$2999.

                Surf in NY is all hype. Will de very difficult for them to succeed. Right now offering no incentive.

                  This whole thing IMO is to promote a NY tournament leveraging the SD success. They see big money opportunity in NY. They know it will take years, with luck, to be successful in this market. We decided not even to tryout for LI Surf. Going to give it a year to see how it goes. Even then, I do not see it as a realistic choice.

                    The reality of all of this is that bringing in yet another training organization won't magically improve the players on long island. In fact, bringing in yet another group and further splintering the talent pool will only make teams weaker. The success that some of the organizations in other parts of the country have is somewhat based on the fact that they are the only game in town for the top level talent. In Long Island the top kids in any particular age group being divided up amongst 10 or 20 teams. And the constant movement between these teams by parents searching for the holy grail only hurts player development.

                    I have no solution to this but like the poster said above, this Surf venture is about making money and little else.

                      Except that in this case I have more confidence in Surf's ability to train players than many of the half-azzed clubs around here. It may not be the powerhouse it is out West but it will certainly give people a better option then some of these fly-by-night "clubs" (quotes intentional) in the area.

                        Possibly. I see many of these "better clubs" playing games to win rather than develop at younger ages. The NY parents won't take well to losing. Kids jump from club to club on a whim grasping for the next great thing. NY Surf, at this point looks like it is rehashing local coaches. Not exactly different. I would like to see more development. Hopefully a club philosophy built around that and not appeasing winning, would be the way to go. Very few clubs do that around here. When you have 8, 9 and 10 year old teams gunning for an undefeated season, it really baffles me. It's like their parents were cut from every team they were on and live through their kids. I really do hope Surf helps to change this mentality. It's the biggest problem in all youth sports.

                          They should do something different and ban parents from practices and games. (maybe let them come to one or two) Then I will bring my kid there!

                            I actually like that idea. Never fly, but I like it.

                              Your description of LI is true for westchester as well. The chasing of the holy grail is a good way to put it. I know one parent who's moved his kid to 5 or 6 different clubs in the past 5 years, including the two DA ones, all in search of who knows what.

                              And I can tell you that Surf is not the elite thing it and botn are promoting. My son's team is a strong team in the wysl and lost a couple of its players to surf just this past week. One of the kids is reasonably skilled but the other is in the bottom 25% of the team. And the weaker kid was accepted based on a phone call and maybe a single tryout. They're just trying to fill up the rosters at $3k a pop.

                              All will be exposed when they finally enter leagues and start playing/losing games in d1 d2 and d3.

                              Capitalism at its best.
