And I can tell you that Surf is not the elite thing it and botn are promoting. My son's team is a strong team in the wysl and lost a couple of its players to surf just this past week. One of the kids is reasonably skilled but the other is in the bottom 25% of the team. And the weaker kid was accepted based on a phone call and maybe a single tryout. They're just trying to fill up the rosters at $3k a pop.

All will be exposed when they finally enter leagues and start playing/losing games in d1 d2 and d3.

    Capitalism at its best.
So I hear the talent has been "disappointing" at these tryouts. Anyone have first hand experience?

Just returned from another contentious game on LI - to those parents everything was the ref's fault blah blah blah. If Surf wants to try and deal with the whack jobs out there good luck to them. Couldn't be any more different from chill Southern Californians

Just read SD Surf page as their goal is to expand in all 50 states. With the exception of Hawaii Surf all other starts ups are met with marginal results. These programs are in lower leagues even after being around for three years. It's a great marketing ploy as money gets funneled back to HQ, but their goal is not to have teams is DAs or ECNL but rather a funnel of money. I can't blame them. But the initial spark will fizzle here and you are left with just another local club with one or two good teams and the rest blah.

          Surf Shirts

I saw a young lady wearing a Surf tryout shirt at the State Cup today in LaGrangeville. Who lets prospective players keep a tryout shirt? Is this an advertising/marketing technique? Pretty expensive one if you ask me.

Shirts cost nothing in the grand scheme of Surf plans. Great advertising

Some markets will work and some won't. Time will tell. They are just throwing crap against any wall in any borough to see what sticks. Not sure where their best opportunity lies, but without early success, NY parents won't tolerate losing and will pull kids to winning programs. Just a fact.

                Summer Surf?

Any word on who is doing what for the Surf Summer teams? Any coaches announced? Any age brackets announced? Any tournaments announced? What is the summer fee? $500 or so?

It will be very interesting to see how well these new Surf teams do during their first year of existence. If Surf wasn't so arrogant from the beginning, I'd be willing to cut them some slack for the first couple of years as they get their operations up and running. But they chose to state they are going to be bigger and better than anything the greater NYC area has seen, so I will be expecting results right out of the gate.

I don't think there's a summer fee. You pay $2500/$3000 for a 12 month program which they said includes all four seasons.

I can't wait for them to put their teams into NYCSL because they will get ripped apart if they get put into the D1 divisions of the NYPL. That's on the boys side, not sure about the quality of their girls teams.

They need an identity in an area. They are all over the place. Pick one area and concentrate there. It's all currently hogwash to me. And yes, they have been arrogant about it.

Not getting great turnouts on LI. Thought there would have been more curiousity.

Yesterday they posted the boys coaches that they've recruited. A couple of guys from Westchester Soccer Club and FC Westchester. Not the superstars we were promised.

                        On their website.

It was guaranteed to be recycled coaches from existing clubs. There isn't a store where you can just buy superstar coaches.

Actually, let me amend that. There is no such thing as superstar coaches.

Not only that but I think one coach was listed for 3-4 teams? Too many teams for one coach to effectively handle. Maybe they'll hire others. But this was a criticism from the start- unless they were paying to relocate coaches from the West Coast (very unlikely) Surf was going to hire locally. Yes there are some very good coaches in this area. But they already have good gigs. Not too many will want to leave a good situation. Same with players. Everyone is in a wait-and-see mode with Surf - except of course Larry on BOTN :)

His ego depends on their success with how he has built them up. If I were them I would tell him to slow up. Looks desperate....which looks bad.

IF surf can buy their way into some top leagues and some top teams / players, they start the cycle of attracting players. Winning games in a top league seems to be what most parents care about for their players as misguided as that may be.
