    Jefferson Cup-- Worth the trip?

New to this travel soccer, coach just told us we are going to the Jefferson Cup in VA. For those of you into this longer, is it worth the trip? My kid is a freshman.

Coach "just told you"? Most clubs are very upfront about what events you will probably go to so this shouldn't have been a surprise. When you commit to playing on a team you commit to all the events they attend as well. Most likely your kid will really want to go, and it's an opportunity to play other teams they normally wouldn't. If your players isn't in the top two leagues then it is one of the better and most competitive events east of the Mississippi all year.

As for it being "worth it"? Depends on what you are expecting.

The club has been vague about what tournaments we were playing back in the fall. "just told us" was like a week and a half ago. I would prefer a few months, like we asked about a Disney tournament at the end of the season a few parents were talking about. We got ' we are looking into it". I would prefer to know now to plan a FLA trip.
But that said, they have been good otherwise, they kids love the team and teammates. As for worth the trip, just don't want to drive 6 hours and play teams from LI. Also they are in 9th grade, would this be a good tune up for what it will be like at "good " showcases for when they get closer to contacting colleges?

As a heads up, 9th grade IS when they should be contacting colleges...as far as Jeff Cup, eh, it's OK. It doesn't attract the same amount or level of coaches that an ECNL or even GA event does, but if the team is in the top 3-4 brackets-they'll usually get a good showing. If the team is USYS or EDP, this and maybe a couple others are their only showcasing opportunities and coaches won't really roll into their weekly league games like they do in other leagues.

Do you not have any parents on your daughters team to discuss this tournament with? How about talking to the Coach? Or other parents at the older ages who has been to Jeff Cup. Coming on TS and saying your new to travel soccer in 9th grade is not believable by anyone. What’s your issue with Jeff Cup?

It's supposed to be one of the top tournaments and usually has very very good teams. They are selective about what teams are allowed to enter

wow stir the pot.... no, son played intramural until this year an finally go into it. Doing well, have no other kids in the family who played. Other parents were the ones who were asking coaches about it. No issue with the Jeff cup except it is like a big financial commitment to kill 3 days and $$ that goes with it. Money is tight and just don't want to throw it away on one weekend.

Are you considering not having your kid go with her team?

A boy who only recently awarded playing club probably won't be a realistic college target. Also if the club was shady about going thst means it wasn't sure it would get accepted, which hints to a lower level team even for Jeff Cup.

If he's possibly interested in playing in college as a freshmen there's still some time to figure that out. When you have some free time go watch some of the U16 or U17 games in the top two brackets. Those will be the ones coaches go to. Ask yourself honestly if he's playing at that level, keeping in mind that there are two other levels above that where college coachs do the majority of their shopping.

Club soccer is pricey. Did you not do any homework? Does he want to play in college? If he doesn't then skipping is an understandable impulse. But when you sign up for a team the expectation is you will go to everything. Tournaments are fun but if you're looking at 3-4 years of this it adds up.

Speaking of expectations, don't expect any college money. There's very little on the men's side.

Not sure about the girls, but I think you said its your son, in which case it is one of highest level tournaments around, but I am pretty sure its very good for girls as well. A lot of the top teams in the country apply, and there ends up being a lot of brackets with high level competition. However, you said that he just moved over from intramural? If thats the case, my guess is that your team is pretty low level and you will be in a really low bracket, and it will be more for fun and the experience, which is fine. Teams do that... I doubt any college coaches will be looking at the lower brackets. But I do think it is very weird that you were only told about this a week and half ago, considering the brackets came out like 2-3 weeks ago. Our coach told us about it months ago. Probably should have communicated that to you earlier.

College coaches won't be looking at many male freshman players, let alone the very probable low bracket this team is in. It is a good competitive experience and kids love going. If money is an issue then the op's family needs to figure out where they want this to lead, if anywhere. Plenty of HS players play for the love of the game with no college aspirations but it's a pricey activity. Also, as a freshman the team's activity is only just beginning. End of spring the player may decide it isn't for them or they want to continue. I recommend to the op that if their player isn't playing very much by the end of spring a different team might be a better fit for his skills and your wallet

No not all. There's a lot of mediocrity at many MLSN clubs (the pay to play ones, not the pro teams) plus restrictive rules means there's still talent outside of MLS. Will they land at top D1 programs? Of course not, but with good targeting they will get recruited and have successful careers
