U13, U12, whatever: players won't go from a strong team team to a weak team just because it is in a league that did not exist a couple of years ago and may not exist a couple of years from now. It will exist if it lets in the high performing clubs, so no need for players to leave those clubs and go to weaker ones to join MLS Next. In theory, the MLS youth academies want good competition, but as someone else pointed out in another post a while ago, they really don't. They are just looking to find the top kids that other clubs developed and they want to avoid losing at all costs to non-MLS academy clubs, which would be very embarrassing. They don't want competition at this age. If a kid is good enough to play for one of the very few MLS academies at U15 and beyond, then he has a shot at the pros. In the meantime, for a good player to movie to a weaker MLS Next club makes no sense and won't happen. -
Pretty much you are saying players will stay on strong teams like Liverpool, Union, Bloomfield & FA Vs. going to an MLS academy? I have some news for you, at U12 some of the mentioned teams don’t exist anymore! The ones that are left are still strong! They been together for a long time (amazing loyalty) fast forward to U13, how will things look like then? Most of the top academies have 2 decent Pre MLS teams, competing towards creating 1 strong MLS team for U13. MLS Next is not asking any team to join if their club is not a part of the MLS Next system. They know that eventually if the kids in other leagues are talented enough, parents will move them to MLS Next Club. They don’t give a dam about a team playing in the Acela league. If this was the case both Union and Red Bulls would have thief u13 and 14 continue to compete in the league. You may not move your kid to a weaker MLS Next team but I guarantee you parents from that same team will. No good team stays together for ever and I have experience that. When the scouts come calling, try talking a parent out of leaving, especially when the scouts say your kid plays for FREE.Comment

But all those teams will have 2 MLS Next teams, so assume each club will be 30 +/- roster spots for players, we are lucky in NJ we have a lot of good teams so there are roster spots. There are only 5 MLS Next teams in NJ, other than RB: CSA Bergen, CSA Monmouth, PDA, Real NJ and TSF. That is not a lot. More are needed, which is why MLS Next needs to expand, which it is. I suppose they could deliberately reject other strong clubs so they can steal their players instead. Disagree that more are needed and will be added to MLS next. It’s already starting to be too crowded and diluted. In addition to the 3 local MLS teams (NYCFC, Red Bull and Union) there are the 5 NJ based MLS Next clubs you mentioned. Throw in the NY based MLS Next teams that are close to NJ. That is NYSC, FC Westchester, BW Gottschee, Met Oval and FA Euro. Also the PA based MLS Next club FC Delco. That’s 14 MLS and MLS Next clubs within a close proximity of each other. NJ is a densely populated state. No kid is going to drive two hours one way to go to Westchester, Queens or Philadelphia 3 times a week. MLS Next has been adding teams, as they should. If it's getting diluted, maybe some current teams need to be dropped.Originally posted by Guest View PostComment

This is not an area in need of more teams. Are there more deserving teams? Maybe, but that doesn’t really matter. News flash, that’s already happening. There are 3 current 2011 Union players from NJ, and not just south Jersey. Two boys drive 2 hours each way 4x a week and the other one is closer to an hour. There are some others in the younger ages of the pre-academy too.
