Probably at age of 11, 12 and 13 these MFA teams were dominating PDA and PF teams, well how that turn out for you? It is development silly, not a wining column.
I don’t understand why so many people don’t get this!!!!! If parents see wins, they think everything is great!

There is no one correct way to play… and if think passing the ball is gonna get your kid a scholarship you need to rethink what they are doing on the field. And this is a possession coach saying this.

Go watch last night Notre Dame vs Stanford finish and tell me what would have happened if Standford built out of the back rather than going direct.

          crazy finish:

Going direct to win the game is fine. Nobody is debating that type of tactic at the collegiate level or even in a high level club game if you are down toward the end of the game. To play it all game long at the youth level is just not smart from a development perspective, it’s not debatable “possession coach”. The kids need to touch the ball more not less.

Why does most of the world play small sided for longer than we do in the US? Why do coaches even MFA coaches play small sided games in tight spaces?

it’s to get the kids more touches on the ball for DEVELOPMENT. Why does that disappear in games? to WIN. If you want them to develop in games same principles apply. The kids need to touch the ball and make decisions, mistakes are okay, goals given up building out are okay, not just “get it up”, not just clearing, not just punting. It’s not that complicated.

Yup - every team pretty much practices the same way. Everyone does rondos and SSGs. And what you think is possession is really a good team beating up a bad team… of course the more skilled team is gonna hold on to the ball longer and want to keep it away from the less skilled team.

Real possession is about methodically and patiently building between the lines to get to goal. I don’t care how good you think your daughters are… no team in Jersey or PA can play that way (or is even taught to for that matter).

If there were no playoffs for the ECNL below u15 - coaches and clubs could focus on development, but they can’t b/c idiots on talking soccer still would be talking about who is better or worse.

The best coaches teach when to possess the ball and when to be direct- which is completely situational. Punting only is stupid, so is only building out of the back, so is only playing “possession”, so is only being direct. So is only relying on tall players, so is only relying on fast players, etc.

Players actually touch the ball less in a possession system. If you want touches your kid should try to take people on more.

parents at PDA used to complain to their coach that Tobin Heath dribbled too much (and made mistakes and cost them the game). Look how that turned out.

God help us. Dribbling is part of possession game, not part of kick and run. Dribbling is something that should be encouraged all the time in possession based game. Dribbling is not part of kick and run game.

I think most would agree 100% and understand that playing true possession is hard for these ages as is playing direct with accurate long passes that don’t result in constant turnovers. The kids are learning, making mistakes and that is okay. There needs to be a good balance based on the situation but when teams punt 90+ percent and kick and run to win we get annoyed because it isn’t right for development at these ages.

Wait and see what? they are going to play PDA this week, lets see how that goes. Sometimes you need to go direct to win games. You have to teach these kids how to WIN at a young age. And all these parents out here RAGEBAITING on literal kids need to go and reflect on their lives. These kids are young and will have time to develop. Focus on your own kid and stop roasting others just because your daughter isn't good enough to get onto elite teams at this age. Please and thank you

pda is the best team in the 12 age group period! Mfa morris literlly sucks. All they do is kick the ball up to their striker and kick and run. They have no other players who can finish! Beware parents... Beware

Another blithering idiot parent, focused on the wins at the youth level. “Sometime you need to go direct” is not the debate or issue parents have, it’s playing kick and run majority of the time. Based on your comment my feeling is you likely don’t understand the difference. Keep cheering for those wins and big kicks up field. Win win win.

this sounds like someone who left the team. I agree every video I see is of the striker scoring (who by the way ,,, is very good!)
