I could see that on a mid to low end school who's coach has 0 incentives to win and all of their bonus money is tied into graduation rates and grades.

Just another uninformed TS answer to someone who has no clue. D3 do not offer athletic scholarships so every student-athlete is a full pay family. D3 players have available to financial aid, grants and merit scholarships. Your post shows another example of TS amateurs.

Not the OP. What you don't realize is that there are schools that give 100% financial need if you qualify. Not a partial percentage but 100%. Just about every prep school as far as I know is the same. How do those "right to dream" kids afford school? and then college? So there are kids getting need in the form of grants and whatever that are paying less per year than your D1 player on partial scholarship. So yeah, your a full pay kid throwing more $ in the form of "donations" at the school, you think that coach is not going to give that kid time? Go bury your head in the sand some more.....

Folks, there you have it……another TS opinion. I will not attempt to answer this. It speaks for itself that these people actually believe this stuff. You can’t make it up. TS conspiracy theories even for mid level D3. Too funny.

How common is it for a coach to not care about winning?

Please enlighten us on this and attempt to answer. Pretty please??? The reality is I didnt make this up at all. Its what my family experienced with a D3 school(currently) also with a D2 school that we didnt follow through on. If a coach wants you bad enough, you have good grades, they make things work. Sorry it didnt work out for you and your kid. Its funny you think everyone is full pay or that the cost calculator applies to everyone.

We have donated less than $500 over 3 years at my kid's D3 school and she played every game she has been healthy for, starting more than half of them and getting plenty of playing time (more than 60min/game on average). Plenty of kids on her team whose families have donated more and play less.

Speaking of amateurs ^. You are correct there is no D3 athletic money. Buy there is financial aid, based on family income, assets etc and merit money, based in grades, scores, extra curricular. FA formulas are pretty straightforward, part based on FAFSA and federal$ but also endowments. That's how Ivies give 100% FA packages to families making more than what qualifies for federal money.

Merit is based on multiple squishy criteria that varies school to school. While some D3s won't give athletes extra merit money just because they're athletes, plenty do. If a school wants someone, they find the money. Between FA and merit often D3 athletes pay less than at many D1s.

Unless your income changes a lot your FA should stay constant. Merit sticks all 4 years as long as you keep up your grades. Outside the P5 conference D1 athletic money is renewed each year. It is for moat athletes doing well buy is not guaranteed. And if your player quits that money evaporates.

A “donation” may get you a spot on the team but playing time is different.

I will say it’s rare. There are those random universities that prioritize education over athletics. Athletics are not 100% the reason why kids attend those school. They are usually not high level athletic schools but athletics may help leverage the child into a certain field of study.
