    HS All State Players

Hi all. How does the process work for choosing players for All State Honors? Is it a voting system with the coaches or is there a governing body that just chooses? Does being on a winning team matter? I assume the process wold be the same for Boys and Girls.

Don't worry, your coach isn't nominating your kid

Like the annual bird migration south in the fall, parents will come in here and complain about how All State is rigged Yada Yada. Parents think that because their kid is a top player they are in the hunt.

Coaches nominate players, other coaches on a committee vote. It's that simple. Are some good players missed because they're on a poor, low exposure team? Sure yes it happens. There's also some political horse trading here and there, but it's not common. For the most part the cream rises to the top.

Division also matters. Shore Conference divisions like A North are stacked with All State players so some get passed over to spread the wealth to other divisions. And younger players will get passed over for seniors because the younger ones have more years for recognition. Like the keeper from Marlboro- likely she won’t get anything this year bc of other senior keepers who are just as good.

Basically, yup, players are skipped over due to politics, playing on wrong team/conference, being a freshman/sophomore, playing in harder to impress positions. It's HS though so no one cares that matter towards your kids college recruiting. A lot of those "standout" players are only so because they play poor performing schools. Could you imagine that stat line from a game with Rutgers Prep vs Salem Tech? This is one of the huge problems with HS soccer, and HS sports in general, as conferences and groups are based on schools size (Ds HS doesn't play 8 of the 9 nearest schools - all within 30mins). Also seems most of the players tend to come from 1 of 3 categories - Those that score/assist ie strikers/forwards/attacking mids, the goalie, and the center backs. If your kid is a play maker on the outside or a holding mid don't hold your breath on ever even being nominated. No stat line means no recognition which means no nomination. There are to few actual soccer coaches and far to many schools and players to be noticed with out a huge stat line. The one that stands out the most is the girl from Bridgton with 58 goals - A group 4 school that played mostly group 1 and 2 schools and had played 10 of its 18 games against schools ranked 14 or lower in there group. Only team over .700 in group 4 to be ranked out of the top 5 (they are 9th with the 3 teams above them at about .500). I guarantee though she will be at worst an honorable mention for state.

Doesn’t matter where you play on the field. Our HS team top scorer is a defender. Coach hides her there and moves her around the field so no one notices.

That keeper from Marlboro is horrible. I believe she also plays for MFS. And believe me, shes not that good at MF. The only reason shes still on the MFS team is because the really good red hairded goalie left. As for high soccer, I'd put her in the bottom pick of keepers. She's OK, but she's not amazing nor a "all state" player like her father thinks she is.

God forbid your defender kid keeps a world class sh!t show of a HS team from getting blown out constantly gets any kind of notice. Nope, but that player who scored 5 goals against a HS team that hasn't won a game in a decade will be head line news. HS and the awards/accolades that come with it are basically worthless as the people making the decisions on them don't know anything about the game or players.

Kids team had center back and goalie named players of the year in their conference so yes those who know notice.

You don't have the most shutouts by accident.

It can happen. Sure but its the exception not the rule. Its not evenly judged. Its about putting the ball in the back of the net.

                              100%

goalies will get credit for the shut out, not the back line. Defenders get noticed if they score / assist or if their coach markets them to the local news outlets. Once the news gets a name in their heads, it sticks.
