Because most teams still play on grass or whatever passes for a "grass" field nowadays.

Once you get to U14+, it becomes almost exclusively AG up in the NE if you are playing for an MLSN, ECNL or GA type team. The only time my kids play grass is when we travel for showcases and playoffs, so practices are 100% turf/ag and 2/3rds of the games are the same. In a season i would say maybe 10-15% of total time played across games and training is grass and that may be over estimating it.

you must be from North Jersey :) Consider the majority of those who need cleats - players at small local clubs, high school (Freshman and JV especially since turf is usually for Varsity), many clubs in Central NJ (I am looking at you Hunterdon county :), adults playing in the parks, etc. All them play on grass.

There are far more teams that aren't ECNL, GA or MLSN then are which is why most cleats in stores are grass compared to AG or turf.

majority of EDP or even travel teams are playing on eitehr club facilities or at local high schools, which are now predominantly turf. I think it stands that by HS age almost all club soccer is on turf and majority of HS is as well.

Shore conference of Monmouth and Ocean county is still much more grass fields compared to turf

Any thoughts on the Nike Phantom Luna on field turf? My kid swears by the fit and comfort but I’m nervous with the spike shape and pattern.

How much space should there be between the big toe and the edge of the shoe?

In north Jersey, yes. In Central and South Jersey, No.
