    Cleat types

At what age does it matter to match the type of cleat (FG vs AG) with the playing surface. The carpet/astroturf seems pretty clear, but are there issues with a U12 player using FG cleats on a slit film turf field?

The FG cleat will put more pressure on the bottom of the foot and is a good way to come out with a non-contact injury like an ACL tear. As stated in some videos, you see pros and college players using FG cleats on turf but sacrifice the slightly greater risk of injury for a slight improvement in grip on long fiber turf fields. While that may be acceptable at those levels at the youth level trying to gain an small advantage because of equipment is easily nullified by actual training and understanding. My D prefers using FG cleats on grass and turf on turf and isn't a fan of AG cleats at all. I would agree with her that buying an AG cleat, which has characteristics of both turf and FG cleats, does a disservice since it tries to do to much with so little. Nike is horrible with this since their cheap cleats are AG and don't get to FG until the Pro level but you can buy a cheap pair of Adidas .3 or .2 on sale for turf and still not break the bank to bad on Nike FG cleats.

This is wildly inaccurate. Nike MG cleats are the ones that have blades and studs; most of their low to mid priced cleats are MG. Nike AG cleats have studs only. They work well. Do a "Design Your Own" cleat at Nike and choose the AG plate.

OMG - what's your deal mate? Is he stealing kids from you? Im pretty certain Danny wouldn't be on a thread about cleats because all he does is train on carpet with trashcans. (not him, but my kids train with him). Lets just have a conversation about boots and kids safety

Go with Adidas “Copa Mundial”. It’s a solid boot for either turf or grass. It’s been around forever.

You can do whatever you want. The question is should you? No but do whatever saves you 50 bucks.

If more boys would simply transition to women that would definitely help with the statistics of women getting more ACL injuries than men.

Generally speaking you want to avoid any of the sharp blade/angular studs that are really common on the Nike mercurial FGs that everyone likes so much. You can look for AG cleats on european sites like unisport store just be careful to adjust for the size if they give you UK or EU sizes.

As mentioned you can also design your own on the Nike site and get them with the AG-Pro plate and those are the best. Those will run like 20 dollars more than the FGs but the bonus is you can pick your own colors which is kind of cool.

If you want an FG cleat that works pretty good also on AG, look for one with only round studs like the Adidas Copas or some of those old school brands like Diadora or Lotto.

with the proliferation of artificial turf, its still surprising to me that FG cleats seen most common in stores
