I am in my 50’s and went through some tough times in my youth, but I am not gonna say kids cannot cope. They have different challenges than my generation.
I mean today if your aren't a winner as a boy you can just be a girls and make states of win an NCAA championship. That is progress in what world?

Your right it was so much easier growing up in the 70's without gas and the 80's with 15% interest rates and a cold war. I couldn't imagine if I didn't get enough likes on a video how I would have coped.

"You all sucked today" - after losing to a team, that all other teams easily beat at Jeff cup.

Yes players are a bit sensitive these days, for whatever reason. But the bigger issue is that what happened during the games are the work of Kelly Sims. She is an an awful coach. Image being a 13 year old and a coach constantly putting you down then blaming you for not winning games. But her favorites can make all the mistakes in the world and have support. You would cry too. Kids know better, and it's why all the teams that Kelly is leading are collapsing and can't win.
To be honest by 13 I could give a crap what my coach said that wasn't instructive on some level. By that point kids knew the deal and nothing a coach said could change that. If a coach had something positive that could be used to improve of course but nonsense was not tolerated from a very early age. It just wastes time and resources.

I think the issue today is really about effort and dedication/not necessarily mistakes or poor play etc.

As a parent I support requiring effort by whatever means it takes whether it be via scolding or praise.

My pre-game pep talk to all the kids was and still is that the only thing they could guarantee on game day is the level of effort with everything else TBD.

You have just summed up Kelly Sims and Tom Shields as a coach. They have good players but can't even beat low level EDP. Team. No player development or leadership skills. The 09s have officially collapsed, the 08s and 07s are almost there. Everyone is leaving.

This is a confusing post. Are you talking about yourself at 13 or how you are as a coach? Or how you are as a parent?

I think you are saying the kids need to give effort and then all is good. Effort and talent are not equal. Example: Abby Wambach (did not train nearly as hard as her teammates and was the #1 player- she was also on drugs and drank), Kelly O’Hara trains harder than everyone combined and cannot get to the level of a Tobin Heath bc she doesn’t have the same talent. So effort is great in theory but not realistic measurement of success.

wow! "whatever means"? is the game KIDS are playing that important to you as an ADULT?

"scolding or praise" - which one do you think works better? Which one makes you a LEADER and not a boss wanna be? Which one do you personally prefer when you are your work or business?

09s are in 3rd in their division, 08s in 2nd, 07s in 3rd. 08s and 09s are likely to make the playoffs. What do you mean by collapsing?

I second that, Kelly is indeed the worst coach around. Her training is nothing more than scrimmages all day. She would kick a ball in the middle and have everyone run for it. All day everyday. No wonder STA is crumbing and players are leaving.

The teams "may" get a wildcard. Collapsing is when half the team, starting players chose to leave the team. Even if they make the playoffs, they will get embarrassed like they always do. Kelly and Tom will go to their genius strategy of all out defense, kick ball game. The players are good, but they fight with each other, the coaches can't train or manage anything. It's a total shotshow.

Who cares about a game the "lesson" applies to whatever task is being undertaken.

I am old enough to know the same style won't work on everyone and what I would prefer is not relevant since I self motivate and don't have any thoughts or preference either way.

I am also old enough to know you get it done whatever manner it takes and feelings need not apply.
