I think not saying a word is way worse. It appears like the coach doesn't even want to be there, let alone care about the game or players on the team. Would rather have a bit to much passion verse none.

Having played for coaches with both styles, I would say not saying a word is worse. To me it equated to not caring while I at least knew the coach over-coaching was concerned with the game.

Sime coaches take the new philosophy to heart - let the players play/act/decide all on their own. Teach in practice, let the games be the exam - use next practice to go over results. Now if they don't say anything at practice either about the game and moments - that would be weird.

Over coaching is the answer. Saying nothing at all isn’t good either, but it’s better than yelling the entire game. Ideally there is a balance somewhere in the middle where you hear the coach every so often and the rest of the time they’re paying attention to the game.

Over coaching tells me the coach has no faith in their players, doesn’t allow them or want them to think for themselves- which may end up in a mistake, and isn’t confident in their own training. A coach that is developing players will coach quietly, pull a player and talk on the sideline and send back in or give minimal instruction during the game. A joystick coach serves no purpose other than looking like a fool.

Just because a coach isn't yelling doesn't mean they aren't communicating with the players about their play/strategy etc.
