you are analysis is based on what actually happened. a much larger and consistent coaching flaw would be why UNC failed to control games in the second half with big leads. so many posts focused on the corner, but lets be clear, UNC goals were also from the same play. Crosses from the RHS. was that a coaching flaw by UCLA? Analyze the whole game and then talk coaching. People heaped praise on the UNC attacker, but they bypassed midfield all game and that allowed UCLA to leave a one dimensional ball striker on the field to influence the game via set pieces and shots. Fontes lack of mobility was never made to count by UNCs insistence on playing transitional soccer. Bad coaching. UNC lost big leads vs possession type teams ( FSU UVA ) and now a transition team , UCLA. Bad coaching. The corner situation was a result of failure to control games, not putting more bodies on the line. Anson Dorrance's brand of sub based pressure has not really worked for a while now. Foreign players, transfer portal and a few other factors have levelled the playing field and UNC has never adapted. the reputation they have gets enough talent to compete at a high level, but tactics are not putting them over the top. Frankly, they never did. ADs career mirrors the USWNT. Dominated with all the advantages, from personnel to sub rules, to playing a large percentage of big games at home.

No one asked about UCLA issues so no analysis was needed.

The only place they have ever been behind is numbers. We seem to confuse exciting games with quality. Two teams can play badly, but the game can be exciting. Midfield play was non existent. We talk about ECNL, GA etc, but there were players on the field yesterday who struggled to pass under pressure, made strange decisions with and without the ball. 2-0 up and UNC were unable to keep the ball or restrict transition. All we care about is who won. It doesn't matter because the USA will always be relevant in Women's soccer thru sheer numbers.

There sure are a lot of jealous TS parents out there. Calling this match a poorly played game to make yourselves feel better about your daughters own soccer situation is pitiful. Both of these teams have such great athletes with amazing athleticism with skill and technical abilities. Was a fun match to watch.

Possible. there are also TS posters whose kids play in games like this and have no issue calling them poor quality when its true.

With UNC, highly likely injured.

UCLA put bodies in the box in front of the goalie on every single corner. With ref allowing some physical contact (correctly) UNC did not bother to counter with any protection of the goalie.

- goalie was on the smaller side
- defenders were protecting posts and goal line (making a save once)

Something like that could be corrected by a defensive captain or a coach.

I’m not sure if UNC is really being coached by the assistant or not, as during the game I did not really see any coaching done by the head coach (other than motivational style?).

Correcting could have come from Defensive captain or better a knowledgeable goalie lining up players correctly.. I think the defenders made a few off the line saves. Gk was out of position several times.

And yes, asst Nahas is coaching UNC too.

The quality of soccer at this level is painful to watch. Great athletes, poor soccer. My own Daughter is a victim of this at PDA. We simply are not teaching the game in this country.
