Rezko, 52, a Chicago property developer and former fundraiser for several politicians including Mr Obama, was found guilty on 16 of 24 counts.


He had been accused of extorting millions of dollars in bribes and campaign donations in exchange for influencing the award of state contracts. He is due to be sentenced in early September, two months before the presidential election, but his lawyers said yesterday they were likely to appeal.


Although Mr Obama has severed his connections with Rezko and the trial barely touched on their relationship, the case has dogged the senator's political campaign.

The Syrian-born developer and restaurant entrepreneur had a close friendship with Mr Obama and the trial heard how the latter received campaign donations generated by Rezko for his US senate bid in 2004.

The Illinois senator subsequently donated some $250,000 raised for his White House bid by Rezko to charity, but prosecutors have said some of the kickbacks ended up in his campaign coffers.

Hillary Clinton accused Mr Obama in a debate in January of doing legal work for Rezko's "slum landlord business in inner city Chicago".
Prosecutors focused on Rezko's corrupting influence in the administration of Illinois' Democratic governor, Rod Blagojevich.

Witnesses said Rezko demanded campaign contributions and bribes in exchange for jobs or state contracts. The defence presented no witnesses.

Mr Obama has admitted that he and Rezko once enjoyed a close relationship, discussing political strategy every day and socialising with their families. He said he did some legal work for Rezko's property partners in the 1990s.

He previously said he was "saddened" by Rezko's legal troubles and would be "disappointed" if he was convicted.
