Many years ago I was on a backpacking trip in the NH mountains, early November. My friend and I went in about 4-5 miles, and set up camp. Grabbing our now near-empty packs, we wanted to hike up to a ridge for a few more miles, then return for the evening.
After some discussion, we decided to bushwack straight to the ridgeline vs. following the trail. Being November, it was pretty cold and ice was forming on some of the shallower ponds. Snow was spitting in the air, and the wind was howling.
Maybe 2 hours of pretty tough climbing we reached the ridgeline. We stopped for a snack and bathit, before heading off again along the trail. Just as we got ready to leave, I noticed in the woods...mere feet from where we had just come up...a loon. Now, this was near the summit of a peak, with low, thick krummholz littered with dwarf birches. The wind was really, really bad up high. No place for a loon.
We debated again on what we should do. I was of the opinion to let nature take it's course, and joked "there's probably a marmot hiding behind that tree just waiting for us to leave so he can have lunch". My partner was less enthused with the idea, but neither of us were really sure of the next step, but walking for a few hours holding a loon wasn't at the top of our idea of fun. So, we decided we'd finish our hike along the ridge, bagging a couple of peaks along the way and would return via the same route. If he was still there, then we'd reassess then.
Three hours later were were back, and he was still there. We were pretty surprised, honestly. So, at this point we decided we'd take him with us and figure it out from there. So, I emptied the bottom of my pack, offloading the gear to my partner, and put him in. Other than some wiggling and a few pecks at my back, the hike back to camp was uneventful.
We put him in the tent propped up at the bottom of my sleeping bag. We tried to feed him a few spots of bread, but he wasn't interesting. I hadn't thought to bring loon-worthy food with us for the hike. My bad. Us Cons, you know....
Anyway, we hung out as is the norm, chatting and passing a bottle around and a few more bathits into evening. Finally, we retired to bed and "Carter", as we had now named him, was waiting for us. He slept on our bags, pecking at our feet occasionally but otherwise, an uneventful night's sleep.
Morning broke and as my partner began breakfast, I was breaking down camp. I let Carter out and after a minute or two, noticed he was gone. I heard some rustling in the woods 30 feet away and found him. He was struggling to climb up, over, around anything in the woods to get away. He wasn't flying...just walking. As you can imagine...loons aren't built for a stroll in the woods.
I picked Carter up, and we finished packing and he hiked out with us in the bottom of my pack. We put him in the back of the car (a wagon) and drove home. My buddy agreed to take him, as I have a dog at home and we weren't sure what he'd do. By late afternoon, he was in my buddy's tub and eating sardines. Seemed a little better.
Thinking he was injured, we evaluated our next steps. I have a co-worker -- a crazy-azz left wing loon (how appropriate) who volunteered at the Audubon Society. Slight tangent....this girl was crazy. On 9/11, we stood next to each other watching the towers burn and she mutters "This is all Saddam. First, Bush's father went after him and failed, and now he's getting his revenge". (Even Tee-Hee Man has to appreciate the irony that the first person this crazy left wing nutjob thought was responsible was Saddam Hussein).
Anyhoo, back on point...I talked to her and told her our story. She said "at this point, you should just let it die as I'm sure he has lead poisoning from those a-hole fisherman using lead weights. Once he's dead, let us know so we can do a necropsy and this will help us with the ban on lead weights in lakes. (Another tangent...I don't disagree with the ban).
Not satisfied with that answer, my buddy found another place in Maine who wanted to help rescue him. So, he drove Carter to York and after a few days, he was nursed back to health. After a very small ceremony, they released him into the Atlantic. He went on a long, low take-off, and was gone. Never heard from him again.
Moral of the story: Never let someone's agenda get in the way of doing what's right.
Next moral of the story: Loons need a long runway to take-off.Comment

The PEOPLE that voted in the primaries picked Trump. Unlike the Democrats , who had a plan to use, abuse and then discard supporters of Bernie. The fix was in. From the beginning. Pushed aside are the very things that SHOULD be paramount to the election, like the economy, and the horrible state of affairs regarding foreign interests. Count up the number of countries that are having wars , disputes, skirmishes, then ad in the terrorism factor and it is plain to see that under the Obama administration, the world is on fire.
But the MSM rides on who tried to kiss someone on the lips , he said , she said, while the REAL issues that are important to more Americans get talked over.
1 % GDP my friends. That means less economic growth, less tax money collected, more budget deficits , more spending on entitlements, and where is HRC going to get the money for " free public College if income is below $ 125,000 " What a fraudster.
And the Big Mouth Michelle ranting because Trump called Chicago , her town " hell " . Well Michelle, it is,. And what have you and Obama done about the violence, the crime, the dead children ? What have you done to boost the employment of inner city residents of color, what have you done to boost their incomes. NOTHING. Because in a comparison of the inner city economic gains compared to immigrants , legal and illegal, they are in second or third place. They have lost more economic status , they have not seen the increase in employment and income that immigrants have seen.
