You really aren't good at math. If you add the under the table workers to the legal workers the percentage is higher. Small business owners (a key republican demographic) are the primary violators of these laws. While the missing trillions do return to state and federal treasuries via sales tax the recovery falls well short of the $300B STOLEN from Social Security and $600B in federal and state income taxes. Excepting of course the businesses that operate on a cash only basis and that steal money from the government and their customers by pocketing meals tax money. This is why elimination of income taxes to be replaced by a federal sales tax makes sense. Another hidden cost of the under the table economy is the money that never makes it into the ACA. At the state level the MA health connector has uncovered thousands of small businesses that have been operating this way. The new requirement to provide proof of health insurance (also W9 reporting requirements....) are revealing just how many small businesses have been gaming employment laws. Plumbers, electricians, carpenters, small restaurants, landscapers, and roofers are the primary violators. These people are claiming $30 to $40k a year in income yet own homes, condos, boats and vehicles with a total value well over $1M.

A national sales tax eliminates all of these problems. In short EVERYBODY PAYS. There will be no more whining about capital gains, deductions and the IRS can focus on enforcement of sales tax reporting. They could get off to a great start by nailing all of the cash only businesses who are the #1 tax cheats in the country. Personally I refuse to do business with cash only restaurants. Not only is it bad customer service but they have a primary motivation to rip off the government. The discount rate on credit cards is around 2%. The ironic thing is that the people in the aforementioned demographics are mostly Republican and love to wave the flag. They just don't want to pay for what they benefit from.

I happen to be very good at math . regardless, any estimates of workers earning under the table income is all speculation, The IRS offers their best estimate, but truly, the actual figures are elusive .

Forget about what we should have and concentrate on what exists. The fact of the matter is whatever is claimed as under the table income is not showing up . Wealth accumulation average under Obama for families has gained, but is still lacking compared to pre-recession levels.
The only boost has been in real estate values, but since the percentage of homeowners is lower, and the gains or losses are regional, the figures can be misleading. Consumer debt is high, College Debt is high, savings are lower, and Stock market gains for only the top 10 % of earners show promise.

When you add it all up it gives you reason to believe that the GDP growth under Obama, under 3 % is believable and may even be lower. As I said previously, there can't be much of a positive spin to be made regarding the economic gains of Americans under Obama. Of course there will be winners and losers, but the majority of the middle class has taken the biggest beating . The ACL alone is proving to be a bigger disaster than anyone could reasonably predict.

The ACA has been responsible for fraud, just as other Government sponsored programs like Medicare SNAP , Medicaid etc. . This behavior is encouraged each and every time, the Government reaches into the pocket of Americans. Their only recourse is to keep their money away from the Government, and can you blame them? As Obama and Progressives have heaped new tax after new tax on the backs of Americans, , strangled the creation of new ventures and existing industries with regulations and policies , people have responded the best way they know how. Add to it the lies and distortions regarding the ACA, and the people have been placed in a corner.
