It is your first night on actual patrol as a Police Officer in a major Northeastern City. You receive a disturbance call , and you maneuver your cruiser in the darkened streets . You arrive with your partner and walk the three flights of stairs to the Apartment noted by the call. The stench of urine , vomit and feces is overwhelming. As you enter the corridor , you can hear voices , TV's , music ,etc. blaring from the apartments.

You knock on the door, and say " Police, open the door ". A young man answers and says what is the problem ? You say there has been a disturbance complaint, and are here to investigate. You ask who else is in the Apartment." No one else here except me, my friend and my sister. " you ask if anyone else was here . he replies " yeah, a bunch of my homies, but they went back to their cribs "

For your satisfaction, and the safety of all involved, you ask to speak to the friend and sister. He gets them and they come to the door. You notice the girls lips and part of her face are infected with what appears to be a serious STD . You ask what has been going on, are your parents coming home soon ?

" They are in and out, sometimes gone for days. I'm 18 , so I look after my sister " How old is she you ask ? " She's 14 " . You suspect abuse and you ask " Do your friends come over often , and do they go in her room ? "

He replies " yeah, they get along real fine, sometimes there is some yelling and screaming, but she doesn't get hurt , so it is what it is "

This is day one , and for the next 20 years, this is just the beginning of your journey to the other side.
