So, the answer to the question is "none", since criminals will find a way around the rules, no matter how stringent they are.

There is more to gun control than "mass shootings". Little changed that can prevent home accidents or make black market buying and selling more difficult can possibly save some lives.
Why does everything have to come down to "it must stop all violence or it isn't worth doing"?

If nothing else, they are valuable as push back against the ridiculous wild west mentality perpetrated by gun manufacturers.

I just don't understand how someone can say "Merica! Love it Leave it" and proclaim us as the greatest country on Earth yet are to scared to go to the market without a sidearm.

I'm not a gun-owner, but can understand someone's wish to protect themselves and their family from crime.

I said I could understand someone's wish to protect their family. That is an opinion held by a few law enforcement organizations as well. Some, they disagree.
So, instead of turning it into a personal attack, I am suggesting I can see their point. Possibly, if both sides tried this, an agreement could be met.
Reading through this thread, that's doubtful.

I would tend to think that among our rights is "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness" seems to fall short of that ideal when we feel compelled to carry a sidearm around. We are not protecting ourselves against bears or other frontier dangers anymore.

Why ? Crime , of course, but even in the safest areas one really has to consider the event of Civil Unrest. We saw some evidence of it in the past few years with riots and disturbances.
The unrest may be the result of racial issues, or even unrest if the Government started reducing entitlements to citizens.
The 48 million or so in America that receive SNAP benefits every month , and the millions of others that receive other Government handout $$$, what would they do if the payments stopped ?
American have been shielded from the actual numbers and severity of the problem of citizens being dependent on Government handouts. During the Depression, the numbers were clearly visible, lined up on the streets, at soup kitchens, selling whatever fresh fruit they could find, etc.
Out of sight, out of mind goes the saying. The Government has kept these vast numbers of dependents in the shadows, out of the Limelight. We see glimpses of the homeless on the streets , the occasional articles about people living under Las Vegas , but imagine if all 48 million had to appear monthly and line up in public. Then there could be no denial of the problem.
We might see a glimpse of this very soon, as changes will come about regarding the time limit for some participants. As many as 500,00 to one million may see a loss in benefits in as many as 40 states.

You are correct. We are not protecting ourselves against bears, since by nature bears are afraid of humans and work to avoid contact. With today's society, it's the opposite. It's man hunting their fellow man, and it would be prudent to consider all ways to protect yourself.

I don't see the correlation.
I don't think anyone says it's perfect. I think everyone thinks there there are changes, lots of changes, that need to happen. That doesn't mean the country isn't loved, but rather it's one's desire to feel safe from elements that are making the country "less great".

I think the goal should be to get to that place where we simply don't need the guns everywhere shouldn't it be?
