There’s now a minor media buzz about John Kasich, the Ohio governor who is now in clear second in New Hampshire—and rising. If he manages to vault even more clearly over Bush, Christie, and Rubio there, he’ll garner lots of national attention. Having attended two of his events, I could see him thriving under a greater spotlight. He’s smart, optimistic, has a compelling personal story, was a very successful governor of a swing state, has an attractive family (wife and two teenage daughters, traveling with him this week in the campaign).

Most of his town halls are devoted to domestic issues: taxes, health care, job creation, tuition, the rise in opioid addiction. Kasich is pretty skilled at conveying a calm “we can do this” attitude towards such issues, and displays a nuanced understanding of them. Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne remarked that the people at Kasich events aren’t angry (in contrast to you-know-who, though the people there aren’t all angry either, they are also hopeful and enthusiastic).

On foreign policy, Kasich seems understated but fairly hawkish: in two events I’ve heard him say Assad is a butcher who must be overthrown, and that he would arm the Ukrainians to resist Putin. I don’t know how fervently he believes this—he certainly isn’t making it a campaign feature. He’s domestically focused.

Wishful thinking. One spot for establishment candidate. Backers must shed Rubio and Bush . Kasich would have to consolidate their support to get to Cruz contender let alone trump.

Today we see the widespread support from GOP establishment to get behind Trump as lesser of two evils.

The GOP nominated moderates in the last two elections which may be why it will be difficult to see them try again.

Romney WAS a moderate when gov of MA but ran as a conservative. GW was a moderate as gov of TX but moved to the right for the presidential election.

Maybe you define moderate differently but I define a GOP moderate as someone who is not interested in imposing their morality on the citizens of the US.

Intriguing now that there is a candidate conservative enough for the most right wing guys in the House - Cruz. He's picked up most of the endorsements of the insurgents like Brat and others who have been driving the ideological drift right for years. Brat deposed Cantor, who just a few years before was one of the more conservative members in House.

I actually wish that the Republicans would go with Cruz so that they can FINALLY stop making the excuse that their nominee wasn't conservative ENOUGH to win the general. They think the public at large is far more rightward than they are and it would do us a lot of good to finally out this to the litmus test.

Interestingly, anyone who has any experience in politics is taking position that Cruz as candidate means bigger bloodbath down ballot for GOP than Trump.

Of course, the strategy they seem to be getting behind as an added feature. When Trump loses the general, they can start crying that once again their nominee wasn't conservative enough, therefore four more years of obstruction u til they get another to chance to find their magic candidate.

Senators all back bush or Rubio almost without exception. Last I checked not a single senator endorsed Cruz.

House endorsers behind Rubio and bush and the nutter caucus guys are endorsing Cruz.

I think palin is the only quasi-experienced elected official, current or former backing trump.

Interesting to see how the GOP puts together any kind of winning coalition here given that they haven't been able to heretofore. And no, I don't think trump will pick up enough Dems to even compensate for the GOP coalition votes he loses. His unfavorability is staggering. Cruz hasn't enough broad appeal and any mainstream candidate they manage to "engineer" in will be treated like a joke.

There is a real chance here for something meaningful. I think the senate may be I. Play and enough votes can be picked up in house that non-insane republicans Left in house MIGHT change tunes after a bloodbath. We can only hope. Then perhaps we can finally get some movement on the key issues that have been getting jammed up for years.

Dangerous sex offenders are being removed from the online database that allows the public to track them because of a controversial high court decision that one judge is calling an “administrative nightmare.”Hundreds of cases could be affected, forcing SORB to warn families.

“As soon as the (board) learned of the SJC’s decision, we began notifying victims and victims’ families for the purposes of safety planning,” SORB Chairman Kevin Hayden told the Herald last night.

The SJC order has also caused lower court judges to kick cases back to the board.

In those situations, the SORB is required to remove sex 
offenders from its online registry pending a new hearing. Some cases, according to court records, include:

•    A man who attacked and attempted to rape a 37-year-old woman while she was jogging in Ayer. She screamed for help and her attacker was quickly arrested;

• An offender convicted of sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl on multiple occasions;

• An assailant who pulled down the pants of an 11-year-old girl and touched her, 
ordering her not to say anything about the attack;

• And a man convicted of touching a 4-year-old girl as other children watched and as she pleaded for him to stop.
