Right, the numbers demonstrate that issues of racism still exist and that passive racism like "white privelidge" exist.

Does this mean that more social programs and spending are needed?

No, absolutely not. The problem is easily manifested on this board and that is simply acceptance and awareness that racism still exists. No amount of spending or welfare can change what is in your heart or your attitude. So this is a social change that can be completely free. Stop denying that a collective attitude doesn't have an affect.

People have racist attitudes because of the way black behave. It is as plain as that, especially for the "urban blacks". Don't blame it all on whitey if you don't get a job because you speak ebonics and your pants are at our knees. Is there no responsibility on their part? I say bring back the 1950s, it was better for everyone. Except politicians that is - tax rates overall were about half of what they are now.

This is the definition of racism. Because people are different than you they are judged lesser.

Fashion choices for teens is your rationalization for "they deserve what they get"? If your kids walked into a Fortune 500 company wearing what they wear be offered a job?

How about the tattoos your kids have? Pretty common now but on a black kid or Latino kid those tattoos are obvious gang symbols but on a white kid they are simply expressing themselves.

The only difference between you and a red neck racists is you're two faced about it. At least the red neck is honest you racists sack of sht.

I've been, I assume, on the other side of this "discussion" from you, but I agree with you on this and the comment you quoted isn't one I personally agree with.

(Of course, I would also tell you, the term "redneck" is just as racist.)

There is a societal norm weather you like it or not. If people want to get ahead in the society we live in they have to conform to a certain degree. My kids don't have tattoos by the way and if they did have them on their necks and faces along with piercings they would have to reap the consequences of those actions. Lack of decent job offers and the like. Actions have consequences for everyone. I have been a business owner in the parts of Boston where you probably would never go and have employed people from all races and there are good and bad from all of them. Everyone I hired got a fair shot at a job but a basic requirement was that you had to speak English and not look scary.

No more money for social programs! Black people have brains. Let them elevate themselves like my white parents did. Like my white neighbors from Ukraine. Like my Asian neighbors from Cambodia. Working hard in school and at your workplace elevates you. I cannot stand when some black talking head tells us black youths resort to selling crack because of the lack of jobs. Bullcrap!!! Stop making excuses! I am white and also clawed my way to the top. Why? I am female and also had prejudices to deal with. Who cares? I fought through it. Still deal with it. That's life. You only have one. Take control. Stop blaming everyone else.

P.s I nor any of my previous generations have ever owned a black slave.

Obviously Liberals do it too. So when will you, the holier then thou type, speak out against it?

My response may be a bit off topic or maybe not. Just recently I was shopping at WalMart (and probably will be criticized for it) followed by a stop at Wendy's for lunch. The cashiers at both locations were nice kids covered in tattoos, piercings, and those Godawful ear plugs. And despite the fact that they were nice kids my thoughts were "You'll never get a job doing anything but what you are doing now because of YOUR choices".

SOME people have racist attitudes because of the way SOME blacks behave. And SOME people will judge ALL of us because of what SOME say and do on both sides of the political spectrum.

I am not sure if I would call it racist today. I think first impressions are critical and if you fall outside of "normal" no matter what color you are you will be judged accordingly. If you look acceptable then you are given the opportunity present yourself beyond that impression. What a person does with the opportunity is up to them. Anyone can get ahead if they play the game. I would even say people go out of their way to give minorities a chance, the ones that are trying to adhere to societal standards that is.

When that social "norm" is used as a value judgement and controlled by a particular group it isn't a norm but serves as a gate for entry.

It is, at its most basic level a tribal mentality that determines either acceptance or exclusion. And while it may be a "social norm" as you say it is a norm who's rules are defined by one group and not "society" at large.

If African Anericans, by your standard, were as powerful and influential as whites are, the "social norm" may be that your kids need to wear their pants below their butt too. Would you think it fair that your kids are excluded or unfairly judged because they are wearing "Vineyard Vine" and not more "urban" attire?

And they are the people who want to be paid $15/hour.

To answer your question, yes. People need to understand their surroundings, and who they are dealing with. Dressing for the occasion or audience is not a new concept. It used to be called paying attention. So if my kid were interviewing with an "urban" clothing company, then I would not suggest Brooks Brothers but something more appropriate.

I would also suggest he try and network with people in that environment to understand better what might work best. My advice on dress code would not mean much as I am admittedly clueless about what might be best.
