But Thomas has also blamed rally attendees for not following plans that had been agreed upon before the rally, and he said that violent confrontations were the result of "mutually engaged attacks" fueled by "mutually combative individuals

The violent anti-Trump group participated in riots responding to the violent white nationalist rally that left one dead in Charlottesville, Virginia earlier this month. The riots left statues from Confederate generals to Christopher Columbus to Abraham Lincoln defaced and in some cases torn down.
Dershowitz noted that some statues put up during the Civil Rights era were meant to intimidate. Those should perhaps be moved to museums, he suggested, to teach students about how statues can be used for bad purposes.
However, doing "what Stalin did, just erasing history and rewriting it to serve current purposes does poses a danger" and amounts to "educational malpractice," the lawyer said.
"Once you start rewriting history of African Americans in this country, you have to start rewriting history of discrimination against many many other groups," he said. "We're both a nation of immigrants and a nation of discrimination against immigrants."
"I'm a liberal, and I think it's the obligation of liberals to speak out against the hard left radicals just like it's the obligation of conservatives to speak out against the extremism of the hard right," the lifelong Democrat stated.Comment

Moving pieces of Art from their original location is not " preserving " history. History has to be acknowledged by all contributing factors, and location is one of them. The problem with the leftist view of historical artifacts like Statues and Monuments is that they are being judged under today's conditions , which are much different than when they were made.
