But anyway, back to the discussion about the over-priced NESCAC. I'm sure some students love it and get a good education. But outside the NE no one has heard of most of the schools, their alumni networks are much smaller, most locations rural and dull, several soccer programs just are not very good even for D3.
Agree with rural and dull. But I disagree with the statement that outside NE no one has heard of most of the nescac schools...there's a reason they call them the baby ivies...and everyone can name all the ivies. However, getting a degree from UMass Amherst versus Amherst College probably won't make that big of a difference over the course of your career. It's really what you make of it after you graduate. I went to a crappy D3 school and I recently had to let someone go for performance reasons (this person constantly bragged about graduating from MIT).

how about a player who had division 1 offer (Merrimack). division 2 offer (St. Anslelm) but was not seen by school (Wesleyan) she will be attending because of pandemic.

No one is who is a serious contender to get admitted to Wesleyan had any interest in St Anselm or Merrimack academics - other than for playing soccer and those tradeoffs probably wouldn't be worth the academic drop. I'd say they have a solid shot for the soccer roster, although many programs are still dealing with deferrals from last year. The good thing about D3 is it doesn't cost the coach but a few nickels to add a player to a roster.

Play on the club team for fun. Why commit to nescac soccer if she is already admitted to a tough academic school? I am sure she wants to play but she has the advantage of a lot more time to devote to academics and exploring new things if she plays club.

you're correct, there was no interest in the first 2 schools. still doesn't deter "their" interest.

Merrimack? Please, they were a bad D2 program a couple of years ago and now they are an abysmal D1 wannabe ... plenty of NESCACs would be at or above their level on the field and way above in the classroom and beyond.

for some kids, a full ride is their only ticket.

No coach will make a verbal offer to a player who showed no interest in their program.

There is no chance Merrimack is even close to fully funded and less of a chance that any player there has more than 50% athletic money ... Most far less to attend d a weak school and play soccer in a weak team.

Not only that but full rides are largely a myth; they happen rarely and when they do are usually a combination of athletic, merit and financial aid, not full athletic. If a smart kids really needs that money they can probably do better than Merrimack. There's some better quality schools that are low level D1 soccer programs.

Merrimack would definitely be one of those cases of "low D1 talent overlapping with D3". Just look at the backgrounds of rostered players

I don't necessarily agree - a coach will add a quality walk on but they'd really have to stand out and add something to the team. All squads have enough practice cones and bench warmers and don't need more. Coaches know all the Covid crap that went down really hurt this year's class. Possibly there could have been an injury that kept the player out for a long period. That said assuming the player is local it wouldn't have been hard for a local coach to come watch a game or practice if they'd been invited.

Never say never, don't be disappointed if it doesn't happen.
