They are because Italy has a very substantial elderly population.

Twenty-three per cent of the Italian population is over 65, making it the oldest in the world after Japan. “Italy is a country of old people,” said Prof Massimo Galli, the director of infectious diseases at Sacco hospital in Milan. “The elderly with previous pathologies are notoriously numerous here. I think this could explain why we are seeing more serious cases of coronavirus here

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...-risk-covid-19

"The first Covid-19 cases to be confirmed in Italy, almost four weeks ago, involved a couple of Chinese tourists who travelled to Rome via Milan."

It then started to spread amongst Italians Now the spread of the virus has taken a turn for the worse, with the hardest-hit region being Lombardy, the capital of which is Milan. Cases have also been reported in neighboring Veneto, plus Turin and south into Emilia Romagna.

According to reports, the authorities think the virus may have been spread by a 38-year-old Unilever researcher who visited the emergency room of an Italian hospital in Codogno. It’s believed the researcher then ran some races, infecting another runner, plus the Unilever employee’s wife. It is not, however, clear how he got the infection in the first place; he had contact with a man who had returned from China, but that man did not test positive.

        Three reasons for this crisis:

        1) Communist Chinese government failed to address it when first discovered.
        2) Communist Chinese government let the Lunar New Year celebrations go on as usual. Hundreds of millions of Chinese travel back to China for family gatherings and then return home whether that’s in China or abroad. Almost all the cases are from this travel and that’s how Italy got it too. If you’ve ever been to Italy lately driving around you’ll come across towns that have large Chinese populations. The Chinese moved there in the last couple decades for work since the native Italian population is shrinking.
        3) Italian government and medical system is inept and did not address the first cases aggressively. All this “lockdown” of the country is just words. The Italians can’t control the Coronavirus (and to be fair, still an open question whether we in the US can either).

          4. China hid it from the rest of the world for several weeks

Do you think that if DT had a way to "hide" the coronavirus risk from the citizens of this country he wouldn't try it? He neither understands nor believes in science, and has zero ability to think strategically, so dealing with a possible pandemic is just way outside his mental capacity.

He ignored it for weeks, told people it will "go away by April" or "very few cases, almost zero." Some media outlets however didn't fall for it. Fox of course perpetuated his myths.
The administration also did nothing to help communities get ready. Most importantly they didn't get test kits ready. If you don't test there's no cases right?

10,000 people tested, 785 cases and climbing

Listening to experts would be a place to start. He has always refused to do that - he has to be the smartest person in the room (in his own mind).

Yeah, you can say the same about the US with the rosy picture they are telling even now. The Chinese hiding it didn’t really add to the spread. They could have been totally upfront about it and it would still have spread. Spread is a product of how aggressive you quarantine and treat and prepared you are; honesty is just something you expect out of the government in general.

Once they did own up to it they released sequences immediately to the world and allowed in health officials from around the world to help and learn from them. Germany and many other countries had their test kits ready weeks before us.

Strategist??? Only strategy Trump knows is how to line his pockets with other people’s money. The rest of the “strategy” is all the right wing agenda that’s been around since Goldwater and Reagan: help the rich, promote racism, and kill off the government and any outside program that gets in the way. He came in without a clue and they filled in the blanks for him.

If he were he'd know that acting like an actual leader would benefit him more in the long run. He's badly tarnished his "brand" even among his fans.

I see we have a legacy media lemming. Keep those eyes glued, and whatever you do, don’t think for yourself. Keep repeating what you’re told to think.

                              Italy has horrible water quality
Horrible and it was hit in August and November with flooding. So where do the animal poop in the street go...into the water and then with flooding...into the streets.
That is why they are getting sick with many things...not just coronavirus. It happens after a natural disaster.

Italy did not consider this when cleanup was occuring.
