Italy in 2019 was the one European nation that split geopolitically and joined China’s “one belt one road” global infrastructure initiative. You now have far more commerce and travel between those two nations than almost anywhere else. That’s the reason why this spread so quickly into Italy. The quick spread into South Korea and Japan was obvious due to proximity. The reason we’re so far behind (a good thing) is we halted travel from affected areas of China nearly 6 weeks ago. We’d be looking at 10,000+ cases already if quick action wasn’t taken.

Horrible and it was hit in August and November with flooding. So where do the animal poop in the street go...into the water and then with flooding...into the streets.
That is why they are getting sick with many things...not just coronavirus. It happens after a natural disaster.
Italy did not consider this when cleanup was occuring.

What good was closing down China when exposed people were coming home from Europe, including all those college kids? We got a little time and the administration squandered it, didn't get test kits ready fast enough. The same issue is being blamed in Italy where it was thought to have been spreading undetected for a few weeks before it blew up.

Originally posted by Unregistered View PostThree reasons for this crisis:
1) Communist Chinese government failed to address it when first discovered.
2) Communist Chinese government let the Lunar New Year celebrations go on as usual. Hundreds of millions of Chinese travel back to China for family gatherings and then return home whether that’s in China or abroad. Almost all the cases are from this travel and that’s how Italy got it too. If you’ve ever been to Italy lately driving around you’ll come across towns that have large Chinese populations. The Chinese moved there in the last couple decades for work since the native Italian population is shrinking.
3) Italian government and medical system is inept and did not address the first cases aggressively. All this “lockdown” of the country is just words. The Italians can’t control the Coronavirus (and to be fair, still an open question whether we in the US can either).

Northern Italy is so, so bad. Now the whole country is completely shut down. This is what public health officials want to avoid. It's vital that the case spike be stretched out so systems aren't overwhelmed.

The US may be capitalist and certainly isn’t perfect, but we don’t let our government kill our own people like that.

Massachusetts is smaller than Italy,” said Sam Scarpino, an assistant professor of network science who heads the epidemics lab at Northeastern. “It has about 100 cases. There were 159 cases in Italy two weeks ago. That’s where we’re headed.
Ok Harvard wasn't so dumb after all
