Our family has made numerous decisions over the years to allow that to happen. We were also fortunate that both parents came from stable families in middle class markets where college was a reasonable goal. I'm sure that helped us set up a situation that would benefit our kids. We also made decisions to forego the luxury cars, the vacation at the all-inclusive resort, the next bigger piece of jewelry, etc. in order to let our kids participate in sports. I wasn't born on third base, so I'm not going to feel guilty if we've somehow made it that far.
Well happy ever after for smug little you.

Those kids fall far enough behind by U12 that they are cones to dribble around by U14.

It isn’t money or travel. Daddy wants them to play hockey instead, which is way more expensive.

Soccer is behind even lacrosse at this point.

Life isn’t fair. Tip the scales to your advantage by any legitimate means necessary. Make your own luck.

I would argue that he or she would have been even more fortunate if the system included more of his or her competitors that are currently shut out because of the unnecessary travel requirements and not because they are lacking athletically.
Why don't you sponsor a kid and give them an opportunity?

We will have to agree to disagree. This is watered down more and more in my view and my player is not benefiting from that. In my view the only ones benefiting from are those in the youth soccer industry What is good for them is not good for our players. Nothing our players can do about it but I can see it for what it is and lament the situation.

Life is not fair to my advantage like most soccer families. I selfishly want the high levels of youth soccer to be more competitive and you selfishly want them to stay as is. It is the same impulse but we just want different things out of soccer.

Find a better team. I’m fine with my kid’s team.

Got asked for background, I assumed same poster that called us fools. In hindsight, I suspect it was different poster who wanted to flex about his NT kid. I guess I am a fool.
You probably are actually a fool if you really think you have much control over the outcome in all of this. The fact is everyone outside of the kid themselves can do waaay more to screw things up than advance them. That includes coaches as well as parents. All of this nonsense about leagues and showcases is just packaging. When you get right down to it, all of it is really rather superfluous. It's just marketing and most of the value most here seem to put on it is based mostly on club driven hype. If your kid doesn't have the requisite things the coaches are looking no amount of travel is going to turn that around. What might actually turn it around is if you focus on building an insane work ethic in your kid instead of which leagues or clubs your belong to. Most of you would be amazed at how easily all of this recruiting stuff comes together when your kids just focus on being the best they can be.

You responded to my post, and I actually agree with you. A really good player could work to find alternative vehicles for exposure. I also agree that that work, while difficult, would still likely be less commitment of time/money than club and showcases, etc.

                        Here's the thing.
                        a) She gets a lot out of it.
                        b) We enjoy it.
                        c) Most parents need it.

Keep in mind the other poster has a HOF dad who’s athleticism skipped a generation and that made things possible for the poster’s daughter.

Genetics matter. Almost as much as commitment.

I don't know who any poster really is, and prefer to stick to content on the page. Since a HOF grand-daughter was mentioned - Good on her! Very proud to have a MA player rostered at Duke.

The core issue here is, as it has been for the past 12 years, is that the poster litters his salient posts with woefully ignorant out of touch condescending dribble as if it’s the gossip, which destroys any credibility he may have.

Yes he refuses to acknowledge the landscape and process has changed even from when his Duke player started high school. And a player at her level will stand out no matter what. For a more typical player tying to go it on your own isn't that easy. He makes it sound like it's a cake walk
