What everyone seems to be missing is that top young players want and need to play with other top level players. Combine that with a good coach and they will develop to their maximum potential. After U-12 the only options are to move a bigger club that will provide that opportunity. The pull comes from college recruiting which happens at big tournaments that only top teams can get accepted into. And so it goes on.

Follow the money, it leads to the hope of getting an offer at a college.

But it doesn't happen this way because of NEP. Good coaches and good players didn't appear out of nowhere when NEP was formed: they were there all along. If a player was too good for their current team, they could just tryout for a better one.

The reason why it is worse with NEP and clubs with many teams is because Youth Soccer is a diseconomy of scale.
