Andover's JV soccer coach fired after parent complaint

Not from Andover but from the town over. A lot of varsity high school coaches run camps over the summer for up to those entering grade 9, I've been told that is how our town team (not Andover), pays for their assistant coach. I don't know this guy, but I know a few parents of girls on the team, and they have all loved him (and none of them played for his club).

The Superintendent's past at other schools when it comes to personnel decisions (especially athletics) has been troublesome. There should be more research into him.

Crazy parents? Maybe not. Just about every high school coach who has involvement with a club inevitably faces this accusation. You can see why parents and players perceive favoritism or discrimination, even when the coach goes out of his way to avoid the conflict. (And might that over-cautiousness lead to unintentionally slighting the kids who do in fact play for his club?) Hard for the coach to pass up the revenue source, but wiser practice might be to separate the two.
(By the way, if this Andover coach is in fact 'over qualified' for the JV job, why does he want it? Could it be the built-in recruiting opportunity it provides for his club?)

          Maybe he just enjoys coaching?

Pathetic. All this hoo-ha over the JV team? Some parents need to get real.

What makes you think he is “over qualified”?

It’s Abbey Villa-they’re all JV players

It was a comment or quote from a parent in the article. The upset over JV cuts is silly, unless it’s your kid (and your kid doesn’t have much else going on...) but the flak a HS coach with local club ties brings on him or her self is all too predictable.

Am I the only one who noticed how poorly written that article was? It was in desperate need of editing.

There are coaches in a lot of high schools that have club connections, either in director roles or just as coaches. Rarely do you hear about a firing because of it. Probably something a bit more to it, or some hard evidence other than just a parent complaint. Maybe a parent complaint led to some digging and some other stuff came out.

YEs many have arrangements like that and it's usually fine. But it sounds like parents expected their kid to make the team for participating. Most coaches aren't stupid enough to outright say your kid needs to participate to make the team but often there is an understood need. That's where it gets fuzzy and parents get ticked off. Same with the preseason "camps" teams have right before tryouts. Technically you don't "have" to be there but you certainly are expected to be. But even then being there is typically not a guarantee, just a boost to your chances. Odds are the player is from a very low level club and the parents couldn't believe they couldn't even make JV.

Club coaches who also coach at public schools are just asking for it. Qualified to coach or not, claiming bias toward kids who play for their club is an easy claim to make.

Club coaches do this to boost their resume, hoping to inherit the varsity job down the road.
The kids benefit because they get a real coach.
You know who coaches if you banish the club coaches? Some teacher that has never even played the game.

Given that we're only talking about the JV level here, why did there need to be cuts at all? So you have a few more players on your roster. And no this isn't everyone gets a trophy. It's just JV, keep it in perspective.
