Worst thing you can say is someone tried, and it didn't work out.
Best thing you can say is they got to play against the best competition and travelled around and had a shltload of fun doing.
Or, maybe, for many reasons beside actually quality of soccer play, the kid found it to be the perfect school for them.
None of these would possibly be anything I could consider being upset about.

And I’m not even talking about academics alone, although that’s a huge part (“Dad! I got accepted to Johns Hopkins! Daughter, you played ECNL and therefore you WILL go D1. Call the coach from Prairie View A&M NOW!”) but just about fit. Maybe your 17 year old wants a small D2 in Vermont and not a big D1. Who cares? Did she have fun all those years? Did you make memories? Sure hope so. I’ll miss the times we shared and I don’t care one bit what division she plays in college.

And therein lies the rub. Great to go D1, but are they getting money to go? Different families need different answers. Getting a 50% scholarship to BC still is paying 45k a year. Is that better than getting everything paid for at umass? Or going ivy and getting nothing?
