As far as the league situation goes, there will be lots of changes this year from last. GDA is gone and there doesn’t seem to me much left, at least locally, of NPL.

I’ve been trying to follow what going on nationally because I think it will have major implications on post-Covid showcase opportunities, and like it or not, we are heading towards that being a major priority, at least for the kids who want to play in college. Last year ECNL and DA were both attracting college coaches to their showcases. Either was a viable option and the high school choice was up to each individual family. For 20/21 here is how I see it:

    ECNL-

For 20/21 ECNL kept its 96 clubs and added 17 DA clubs and currently sits at 113 clubs. From what I can tell it was the power clubs (Surf, Real Colorado, FC Dallas, Real So Cal, NC Courage, etc. ) plus clubs that filled in holes geographically in places like UT, KY, etc. the league should be the strongest it has been since the DA fracture from a few years ago.

    ECNL-R-

ECNL Regional league was rolled out last year in just a couple markets, including the north east. This year there will be a nation wide roll out with all the ECNL clubs B teams, plus a few dozen other clubs who are applying to ECNL’s top league. I think the level of play will go up in this league over the next few years, but we shall see. Whether ECNL can deliver showcase opportunities to the regional league teams, similar to regular ECNL, will be the key question.

    GA-

The Girls Academy will be in its first year. For us, the teams in the North East are pretty much the same. Will be interesting to see what the league can or can’t become. The league is made up of 45 or so former GDA clubs plus 15 or so clubs who were neither ECNL or DA last year.
    Three concerns about GA are:

    1. How many players from GA clubs were lost to ECNL?

    2. Are coaches coming to the showcases, or, due to $ and travel issues from Covid, are they focusing on ECNL?

    3. If ECNL expands by 6-8 clubs next year (as their commissioner has said they will) how does that impact the viability of GA with its strongest clubs gone?

    DPL-

The DPL is last year’s NPL back filled with some NEP teams. Not much more to say.

From what I have read, I expect another ECNL expansion next year to absorb the top 8 or so GA clubs go. If so the ECNL 21/22 season will be the best talent consolidation, probably ever. That’s a good thing for our girls entering the recruiting years.

The New England & North Atlantic conferences both have 9 teams. Personally I expect them to go to 10 & 10. That means two more additions from NH to MD. Could be 2 teams in New England, two teams in North Atlantic (with some shuffling) or 1 & 1. There are certainly at least 2 more deserving clubs, but who knows what will happen.

Yes it was. I would only clarify to their post that of the new clubs added to GA or GAL or whatever they're calling it, most were as weak if not weaker than many of the clubs that stayed. That means another year of continued quality drop off since GDA was launched. Each year there was several top and medium level clubs leaving, replaced with ones that weren't nearly as good. How much longer can the quality spiral downwards and there aren't enough quality teams and players to 1) keep families in the league? 2) get coaches to games and showcases?

Yeah, but at this point it’s a fantasy. Covid isn’t over and until leagues are playing and NCAA allows recruiting, then the only thing to consider is whether your club has enough money in the bank to get to the other side. No more government handouts to the rescue. If play/recruiting bans last into the spring 2021, you’ll start to see clubs and colleges/programs going belly up. Love to say that won’t happen and hate to sound like a downer, but that’s reality. Just look around and ask yourself if the situation is looking any better.

Excellent post without being a cheerleader or bashing any of the leagues.

Two points. First, i think that the post under sold just how much the ECNL strengthened this year over last.

          Solar
          So Cal Blues
          Surf
          FC Dallas
          Real Colorado (2 teams)
          Real So Cal
          NC Courage
          Penn Fusion
          PDA South
          Portland Thorns
          CA Thorns
          La Rocca FC
          Charlotte SA
          Louisville NWSL academy

Plus, you have Beach, Legends, Patedoras and West Coast (who are four of the stronger clubs in CA) plus FC Virginia & Sporting Blue Valley with teams in ECNL-R, meaning, they are likely each one year away from ECNL memberships. I hope NEFC can get in as well. As the poster stated, 21/22 ECNL will likely be even more loaded.

Second, with the clubs who are in GA, how much did they really lose talent wise? We won't know until the games start. Its great to play "Top Hat" but supposedly the club lost 8-9 starters per age group. Kudos to SSS & NEFC for keeping their 2007 teams intact, but that looks to be the exception, not the rule.

If you thought Oakwood 2007 was bad last year just wait until you see what they look like now. FSA & CFC picked up the few good players.

              Oakwood
              seacoast
              STA
              Cedar Stars
              New York Soccer Club

              And GAL lost Fury

All those above teams will absolutely get pounded by NEFC at every level. I mean what kind of competition is OW or Seacoast or STA or New York football or Cedar Stars. All those teams are middling mid level club teams!! YUK! YUK! YUK!

NEFC will beat Seacoast, Oakwood, STA, Cedar Stars, NYSC & LISC by a touchdown every week end. Select will beat them all as well.

Most of those top GDA clubs were ecnl clubs only 3 years ago! Others had already returned last year and the year before.

That just not happening, but now that you brought that up (ECNL teams "leaving")... what ever happened to the charter rule to kick out the lower performing clubs for new clubs? Maybe ECNL should boot Scorpions and Stars White and get SSS and NEFC.

Good luck with that. Why don’t you start a petition to get out of your crap league like Top Hat did?

Agreed. ECNL has no interest in ensuring the top teams and players are wearing the badge.

I can see NEFC being let back into ECNL within the next 2 years. All ECNL has to do is take a few of the top GAL teams and then that league folds. I think if you have Stars, Scorpions and NEFC in ECNL thats great representation from Massachusetts in ECNL.

If the leadership chooses to run the league like a top league, and now cow-towing down the a few of the clubs, they would have something. Edited for grammer.

Reality is they've already taken a number of what would have been top GA clubs just not in MA. Does ECNL look at a state like MA and think they need to add another team more or less in the same general area? Not to mention opposition from Stars and Scorpions.
