Just wondering for down the road. Do a lot of players quit? Do they have affinity to current players or do they bring in players from outside displacing players each year.
The roster at U18 is kept small because they only keep a small core group of players together as they move through the age groups, mostly ones that are able to have success playing up. By that age, they feel they've found all the worthy players in the region and won't add any new U18 players, instead they leave the roster spots open for younger players to play up in order to speed up their development.

Easier said than done. Coaches get into black-listing a 16 or 17 year old. The reason they took all those classes on playing development and helping kids reach higher levels..haha. Still comes down to "egos" even at the expense of many.

Now a MLS/DA player going to Europe during season
without the clubs knowledge is a little over the line, face it. The player knew what they were doing.

Yes to all but he went during winter break. If they cared about development they should be happy he was getting a high level experience. And since the Revs constantly skirt DA rules their following the rules rather than making an exception is very disingenuous

The roster *gets* thinner as the teams get older b/c boys figure out that if they're not one of the stars that they're at best cannon fodder or cogs. For the price (free!) they can get very high exposure, and if lucky a college coach will need a cog in the position they're playing. It's not a bad deal at all but it's not like the Revs care about all the players. Then again, ISL plus a waiver or a league "lesser" than DAP works out quite also, if not another DAP option.

"Worthy" is such a loaded word I call bull**** - it's attrition. If you're one of the special ones, you play up to hopefully test you against players the same size and physical maturity. There's not a whole lot of tactical knowledge being developed, and you only have to watch the senior team to discern that.

Good point- some were given permission to play outside of the academy, some played without permission but with their knowledge, and it was just so friggin random.

That's one reason why parents have a hard time taking them seriously

You must follow the rules! We don't, and we let some people break them, but the rest of you have to fall in line

              - Revs Coaching Staff (aka do as we say, not as we do)

The big drawback in this approach is that the training suffers markedly for the small number of age-appropriate U18 players left on the roster. Although the larger squads at the younger age groups create a nice "competitive cauldron" training environment, stagnation occurs when players no longer have to compete for their starting positions. This is why the greatest improvements occur early in the Revs careers of most players.

There is no 'competition' for starting positions- they are decided on day 1. Very little deviation.
That's why there is so little improvements in the younger age groups.
